Do you have a lithium battery installed, open the lcd and you will see a gray cover. Take the cover off (pops off using your nail) and either the battery is not there or it is installed incorrectly.

Card Error
From what I know, and card over 2gb needs a different reader. in this case, I am guessing that the card is an SD card. If you look carefully, you will see HC right below the SD logo. these are High Capacity SD cards, totally, different from traditional SD cards. so what you need to do, is find a 4gb regular SD card (highly doubt one exists) or get a smaller regular SD card (2gb Max I think)
Gl2 " overlap" flashing in viewfinder
The flashing overlap on your screen is telling you that you have a digital fader effect (D.EFFECTS) selected. To remove the effect, simply press the D.EFFECTS/BARS SELECT BUTTON and select D.EFFECTS [OFF].
For further information, check the manual under Using Digital Effects.
Sound recording with external microphone
An instruction manual is available for download at www.canon.com
Your camera, according to the manual, has a single input for microphones, and in the internal menu, AUDIO DUB has to be set to MIC. IN. when using an add-on microphone. An MA-300 hot-shoe microphone accessory can be used, and then the input controls would be on this device, not the camera. Your camera can also record in two different audio qualities: 16-bit two channel or 12-bit four channel. If you are using an accessory you may need to select 12-bit in the internal setup menu in order to have enough channels to add on the additional microphone(s).
Finally, and hopefully not, the camera may have an internal hardware problem, and so would need to be serviced.
