Sony VAIO VGN-S460 Notebook - Page 4 Questions & Answers
There is a slot at vgn-s460 back side and i dont know for what
Hi Sohail!
The slot located at the back of the Notebook is a DC-in port and a Battery Connector wherein you can connect the AC Adaptor and a Battery pack respectively. The port located on the extreme left on the back of the Computer with the Computer bottom facing downward is the DC-in jack and the other on the extreme right is the Battery connector.
I'd forward you the link where you can download the user guide for the Computer model series to locate all other ports and controls on the Notebook.
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/VGNS400-T300series.pdf
Please refer to the page # 19 of 200 to locate the ports available on the back of the Notebook.
Bye, take care.
Rahul.

Have vaio VGN-S460, window 7. Can't get internet
Windows 7 is still a beta and Sony probably doesn't make drivers yet for the network adapter on that computer. You might be able to install the windows vista or xp drivers and that may work. You might have to manually install these drivers, however.

I am missing the control key button on the lower
The only thing you can do at this point is to find a broken sony laptop keyboard and take the keys off that and put them on your keyboard or just to get a brand new keyboard cause if certain keys fell off then others may be soon to follow.
Just from a search from Ebay brought up this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Keyboard-KEY-VGN-S370-VGN-S380-VGN-S430-VGN-S460_W0QQitemZ270336571206QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Mice_Trackballs?hash=item3ef150b746&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
You can buy just the keys you need and the total cost would be less then the cost of a new keyboard and a new one can cost around $80.00 as according to this website:
http://product.pelltechnology.com/Sony_Vaio_VGN-S460_Keyboard_replacement.asp
At least you have a choice in which way you want to go.

Sound
I suggest that you try to update the Driver in Safe Mode and check if the issue is resolved.

Toch pad for my sony vaio pcg-grz
Have you tried to update the driver software either by Sony's website or going into Windows/Mac Driver update facility?
If it continues not to work it is clearly a Hardware failure and you may need to get it replaced. Depending on where you live visit somewhere who deal with laptops and get a quote on how much it will cost for you to get it repaired. (alternatively if you are still under guarantee just send it back to Sony)

the fan is screwed together with the motherboard, the only way i figured is to separate it is completely unscrew the motherboard, cd drives.....then unscrew the fan from the bottom side of the motherboard....
i took the fan out just today, wantted to add some lubricating oil to it, but then can't manage to separate the blades & expose the centre
how much did the replacement fan cost? i am in canada, not even sure sony stores here have it.

My laptop is showing a black screen nad nothing
Remove the back panels and remove the RAM and unplug the battery and any source of power. This will purge the memory of any instructions that maybe causing your problem. It sounds like a cooky fix but it works.
The black screen is usually the cause of this.
Let me know if it boots, if not we will find another solution

Restoring operating system for Vaio VGN-S460
Not necessarily. Formatting the hard drive will only wipe the data on the partition being formatted. The restore partition, if it exists, will still be there.
I have read that the restore partition can be accessed by pressing F10 at startup. As I don't own this sony machine, I can't verify that.

No power at all to my sony vaio vgn-fs730
Some notebooks has moisture sensors that will disable them until it has dropped far enough to avoid damaging the very low level IC that have operating currents in the nano and femtoampere ranges.
Unless it was dunked, I would recommend leaving the cover open and putting it in the path of warm air for several days before trying it again.
Remove the battery pack, and if there is any space around rear connectors, point that panel toward the source of air flow.
And if your optical drive has a small hole near the drawer, straighten a standard paper clip, push it into that hole, try to eject the drawer manually and if you can, leave it open too.

Get an old monitor CRT or LCD. Connect this to the back of your laptop to the appropriate connection. Turn on this monitor and your laptop. Now on your laptops keyboard are some blue highlighted keys called function keys. Press and hold the one marked "Fn" and then press the F7 key (on my Sony - yours may be different but the key with a small blue rectangle with LCD inside a foward slash to what looks like an oval with square sides) this is the external monitor key. If the external monitor comes on with the laptops screen information then your mercury lamp in the laptops screen has died. Then a reputable repairman can replace your screen and lamp for $200. - $300. If nothing appears on the screen then most likely the video chip in your laptop has died. Replacing this will require a new motherboard for the laptop. You should contact Sony about price and any extended warranties they may have,

Sound doesn't work on Sony Vaio VGN-sz480
I'm confused. A Codec is used in an audio player like Media Player 11. If your computer has no sound when it comes on then you need a driver. I looked up your model and found a Realtek driver speciafically for your machine. You can download this at:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNS460. If you need an Audio CODEC for your media player I would suggest downloading PowerDVD from download.com to insure that your system sound is working correctly then you can use the Microsoft CODEC installation package to determine the real missing CODEC.

Here is the link to that driver file for that sound issue.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNSZ480&upd_id=2556&os_id=28
Run the setup and it should install it. Verify it afterwards by going into the device manager and making sure that its there underneath the sound area.
