In normal condition the range finder works detecting the reflection of the laser beam on display. When the laser beam is not detected the range finder will not work and will show the word "Laser" to report the fault to the user.
In some case the problem can be caused by dirty rangefinder screen or weak batteries. More commonly, with prolonged usage, difference of temperature and continuous shaking the rangefinder laser goes slightly out of position (calibration) or laser beam frequency changes slightly and the beam is not detected by the sensor.
Try changing the battery and cleaning the front screen. If that does not work the range finder must be tuned and calibrated. The repair is a major job that must be done by a specialist.
