Sony STR-DE545 Receiver - Page 4 Questions & Answers
Sony STR-DE545 5.1 Channels Receiver
It sounds like you have unit in setup mode. The "L C R" is Left, Center, Right. You can set balance and volume levels of each with this mode.
Use remote to select 5.1 dolby surround to get unit out of 2/1 "stereo"
Issues with soldering connections!
Soldering proficiency, like welding, comes with experience.
Cold solder connections may maybe secondary to orginal problem. What problem were you having originally?
Power fault
You probably have shorted rectifiers and/or transistor(s) on standby board. Trouble-shoot rect bridge and cap. Feel stand by circuit transformer for abnormal heat, sure sign
Sony STR-DE545 receiver
You should have access to receiver's format from remote or front panel. If the unit was moved around a lot and for a long period, the micro-processor may have locked due to ambient static electricity. Try unplugging unit for seversl hours, then re-try

Just answered that question for you in another post, but here it is again in case you miss it.
Hi there, Is the socket actually broken, or is it just playing up. It may just need some dry solder joints reflowed to fix it. If you are lucky, this may be done without a full strip down.
If you need to replace it, you will have to pull the board out of the unit, or at least the back panel completely off to get access to the soldering of the socket to replace it. This is not a difficult job, but often requires almost complete disassembly of the amp to do so. Time consuming...yes. It is something that unless you have some confidence at dismantling and reassembly gear, I would suggest that you refer it to a repair man. Good luck, I am happy to answer any more questions you may have.

Sharp bursts of static
phono is the only input that uses a low level input (mag) I bet it has something to do with the input processor.
Dvd will not play
Either the disc is wrong format for player or it is extremely dirty. Clean off with windex or some other type cleaner. Also, will it play an audio CD? Let me know and we can go from there. GURU JAY
No power
Check the circuit boards for loose screws. The chassis is used as ground and a bad connection could be the cause.
Surround Speakers stop working
More then likely unit has poor solder connections. Try lightly tapping on chassis to see if you can get audio to either cut on or off with the vibration, If you can unit has intermittent solder connections probably around power amp ic701 where most of the heat is generated. I have a PDF service manual if you need it for yourself or for a technician if you take it in for repair

Reduced audio output from right channel
Try lightly tapping on chassis to see if you can get audio to cut on or off with vibration if you can most likely cause is bad solder connections. This unit is well known for poor solder connections especially around poweramp driver IC's IC701, IC501. Also Electrolytic Capacitors in unit have fluid in them and heat Evaporates the fluid causing them to not operate properly over time . Caps that usually go bad are around parts that run hot like Power amp drivers
Just a couple likely suspects.
Try unplugging overnight to give unit a Good Reset also double check all setup settings.
If you need service manual I may be able to get you one

Left channel not working
Probably Broken solder connections in unit. I have seen these units have many poor broken connections throughout amp espcially around poweramp ic .IC701
I have a service manual if you are interested in it

Rear Speakers
Update:
Took apart the boards and resoldered the Blue Relays. Now it seems to be ok. It looks like due to bad solder, the relay trips when the board warms up. Taking apart was relatively easy, several pluggable connections and many screws to deal with. I took a digital picture before pulling apart, so as to remember the connections. Also, had to remove the smaller boards to get to the big board at the bottom. The challenge is to solder, must be extremely careful to not drop solder on the board.
Problem with 'central' speaker output
took apart my reciever and found that the blue relays in back in the middle are starting to malfunction. I tapped on them and they clicked. When I tapped the right one, i got the sound back in my center speaker.
It works a few minites, then stops and displays "Protect".
Your complaint isn't a problem at all. This is a usual characteristic of the relevant amplifier. The protection mode comes on when the main volume/bass/treble or whatever is too loud. Unfotunately, you can not overcome it. But, as they always say: It's a Sony:)
Protector
If you took all the speakers off the reciver then it still goes into protect, the reciver detects DC on the output lines. That means there is a short in the output stage of the amp. It could be an output device, or a diffencal Transistor. If you can trouble shoot solid state electronics then you should be able to find the faulty, but if not your experienced at electronic repair, am afraid it may cost more then the reciveris worth. Good Luck
