About the only solution that I know of is to send it to a company called Weaknees. It's expensive but they do good work. The prices for various repairs are on their web site. If you don't have any other problems order the specific tuner replacement. If you have other problems, you might want to go for their "general fix" solution.

I had to same problem with mine after a power outage. Luckily I had a spare TIVO series 2 receiver with an identical power supply. Popped it in the busted TIVO and I am back in business.

I just downloaded the manual for the DSR704 (except fo the inside of the front cover which I now need).

I went to directv.com/manuals. It gave a list of the manufacturers of their recorders. Choose Phillips and then select the DSR704. It was very easy once knew where to go. Good luck.

It's most likely the drive. You can buy preconfigured kits or buy the software and hard drive and do it yourself.

You can send it out to CCS in Indiana and they'll test/repair what is necessary (if they can). Some of these units are very old and they aren't repairable, but they do their best and are very quick on turn around times.

I'm having the same problem. Moved from one room to another and no nothing happening except the fan.

Check the satellite signal strength on different transponders. On mine, 16 ands 17 are intermittent as are a number in the 20s but only on satellite 2 (even if you switch the cables). It's probably a bad 2nd tuner.

The only fix I've found is to repeat the "guided setup" and tell it you have only one cable coming in. That will take tuner2 out of the loop.

As far as I know, you can't, but I have a different solution.

These units don't need to call in, unless you order PPV. However, to get past that first "guided setup" call, which is nothing more than a test call, I'd recommend just taking it to a friends house to make the test call.

After that, you'll have to put up with the nag messages about not making a call, or hack the unit to make it not want to make a call at all.

It could be the hard drive, it could be the unit. The first, and easiest step is to replace the drive.

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
