My hard drive is dieing on this unit. I bought a hard drive to replace the old one. How can I format my new hard drive and where can I find the Tivo software needed to replace the drive? Is their any way to use cloning software to copy the old hard drive onto the new one?

You might be better with a brand new drive (get an AV type drive, that holds up to 24/7/365 use) and use a program called InstantCake, available from Weaknees. It formats the drive to the weird Linux format the unit uses, and adds the program. You'll lose all the stuff on your old drive, but that's the breaks. If you get a SATA drive, get one of the small SATA-to-IDE converter boards that fit on the back of the drive. Also...get a big drive, but not too big. I'd suggest a 320 GB SATA drive.

Hi there, use any hard drive cloning tool. like Acronis or Norton Ghost. with hard drive cloning you'll get exact copy of your old hard drive to your new hard drive.
Note : Do not format your old drive until you thoroughly check your newly installed drive is working fine and windows 8 is genuine.

All the best.

Convert and Transfer Tivo/TS to iPad for HD 720p Playback
I use the old version of Toast 8 with TiVo Transfer to download my favorite shows from my TiVo Premiere to Apple hard drive. However, I could not get the movies to my new iPad via Toast or TiVo Transfer. The file extension for the TiVo videos is not supported by iTunes. Thus, I need to convert TiVo to iPad compatible format.
Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac is the right TiVo to iPad converter for me to convert recorded video to a file that iPad can use. The Mac Video Converter for iPad does convert .tivo files to .mp4 for iPad. I like setting it up to convert my favorite TV shows and movie, and go to bed, leaving it working. Then sync them to iPad for watching on my travel.

For you guys who may have the same problem for converting TiVo to iPad MP4, I here demonstrate the quick steps using Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac.
Step 1. Load TiVo videos to Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac.
Run Aunsoft Vido Converter for Mac as the recommended Mac TiVo to iPad converter, and click the "Add" button to load .tivo videos or .ts videos, which had been transferred from TiVo Premiere to MacBook Pro or iMac.
Step 2. Choose iPad 720p output format.
Click the "Format" option and choose iPad > iPad HD Video(*.mp4), and the Mac TiVo to iPad converter will downscale the 1080i TiVo videos to 720p iPad MP4 videos.

Step 3. Convert TiVo/TS to iPad MP4.
Click the convert button under the preview window, and the Mac TiVo to iPad converter starts transcoding TiVo/TS to iPad MP4 in 720p.
After the conversion, the HD videos will be ready for syncing to iPad. With Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac as the TiVo to iPad converter, it is easy to transfer TiVo videos to iPad.
Tips:
If you have TiVo videos from your friend, remember to ask for the Media Access Key (MAK) for the files. Click the Option button and enter the MAK before loading TiVo files for conversion to iPad.

Tivo XL4 constantly reboots

If you have done the usual thing - i.e. pulled the plug and done a forced restart and the problem continues, you've probably got a bad hard drive and will need to replace the unit. But I trust you have called Tivo tech support at 877-367-8486. If you are an existing Tivo Customer, which it sounds like you are, they've got good deals right now - if you call them - for new ones - prices ranging from $129 for a straight XL and $199 for a 4XL

Humax digital recorder picture freeze every 10 minutes

Humax are having problems and are starting to send out software upgrades (night-time updates) - seems to be related to the new formats on the MUXs for the digital switch-over. Our 9150T hasn't been fixed yet but due any day (I hope)

Humax Tivo will not record to DVD

After the update to 1.15 I had to delete EVERY recording on the unit. After that, any new recordings would burn just fine. However, some have found that same failure even after a hard reboot (repower). Called Humax level-1 support and they suggested a replacement unit so I swapped it out. But I've since learned that TiVo "pushes" a DVD firmware patch (possible supplied by Humax) from 1.08 to 1.15 and that patch is the culprit. That patch is suppose to make the DVD burn at a higher spin rate. After talking with level-2 Humax support they heard of the problem and said "the unit is working as designed", meaning, the DVD drive manufacturer specs say the drive is capable of a faster burn rate. So now I have Humax DTR800 #2 and so-far-so-good, but TiVo hasn't pushed the patch onto the box yet!

Stuck at "Welcome Powering UP"

It's most likely the drive. You can buy preconfigured kits or buy the software and hard drive and do it yourself.

You can send it out to CCS in Indiana and they'll test/repair what is necessary (if they can). Some of these units are very old and they aren't repairable, but they do their best and are very quick on turn around times.

Clearing everything

A DVR has a small computer built in. When you run the clear everything option, this feature reinitialized the computer Hard Disk Drive doing a limited format. A format of a Hard Drive is always a slow process which normally takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours on a 40 GB drive. Yours will actually take longer since it is larger (250 GB for 200 hours recording time), so I wouldn't panic yet. As long as you have a flashing red light on the box, it IS still formatting. If it goes beyond 8 hours, I would suspect you might have a problem or have been having some problem before (that motivated you to use clear everything). If, after 8 hours, it hasn't completed the format (red light flashing) then I would pull the cover on your DVR and pull and reseat the EIDE cable on the Hard Drive. Then restart again. Dirty contacts can cause this problem as well. Put the cover back on, do a hard restart and let it run again. If after another 8 hours, the problem still persists, then you may be experiencing read/write data errors on the drive. A failed or failing Hard Drive is most likely the culprit and it will have to be replaced. www.weaknees.com sells pre formatted and loaded Tivo Hard drives. If this is a Western Digital Drive, I would replace it with a Maxtor from them since the Maxtor are a special design just for DVR's.
