If there is someone who is quite confident and with the help of a service guide (which can be download from internet) then yes it can be done, but do not attempt repair if you are not certain, i would leave it to a skilled repair/service centre.

When this happened to my Officejet 6400, I noticed that by putting weight on the hinge area, the printer would work. I have made a makeshift clip out of wire hanger so that there is enough pressure on the hinge side of the printer to keep the printer working. You may have to take the clips off to change the cartridge but we can re set the clips. Good luck !! Jyotiprakash

Sounds like the printers mainboard died.
