Take it back... and have him fix it again... this time ask him to tell you exactly what he did to get it to work.

1.put new spool of thread on
2.watch the thread on the take up lever,make sure it doesn't come off
3.check the tension disk for loose threads, if there are threads pull out
4.check needle for being bent or blunt --if so replace

make sure the needle is in the correct way round that is the most common cause

This can be used to center a zig-zag stitch in the presser foot - just move the needle position half the distance of the stitch width.
