If its vista or windows 7 type defrag in search bar. Must be xp go to permance and maintenance in control panel and use defragment. If you have an older machine it can take some time. Windows 7 machines defrag quite quickly.

If it's at bootup:

You need to temporarily remote the CMOS battery from the motherboard to reset the bootup password.

Either you have a memory issue or operating system problem.

First, disconnect all cables. Be certain to dispel static electricity by touching metal. Remove the battery and memory cover. Try reseating (removing and reinserting) your memory (try one module at a time to test).

If still a problem, boot your system to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly). Go to System Restore and choose a date when your system worked OK. Note: with System Restore, everything, including your documents and other files you saved on the hard drive, will roll back to that date.

If you have Windows XP you can boot up using safe mode, then open user accounts in the control panel and remove the password from there.( Tap F8 continually when booting to access safe mode )

check using the onscreen keyboard or you can also check with an external keyboard to see if the same issue occurs with those. if it does the issue could be a software related. you can go to device manager, under keyboards uninstall the Keyboard Device and restart the computer.

Also, boot from the OS install DVD and get to a command prompt where you can run CHKDSK.
