The power for several other things on your bike passes through the starter relay as well. If this is happening, you probably need to replace the relay. Check the plug and it's connectors as well.

Good Luck

Check connections at the battery.
Most likely a bad ground.
If good may be starter relay or starter solenoid.
Also what was the last thing you had done resently to the bike?

Where green wire on starter goes on 1997evo to make the starter button work and what you have to do to fix

The green wire goes directly to the starter. When you look at the end of the starter, you see a pentagon (five sided) shaped piece of metal with three small bolts holding it on. There is a connector at the top of this plate. Thats where the green wires plugs into.

The other end of the wire goes to the starter relay. I am not sure where this relay is located on your bike but I would guess that it's under the seat somewhere. It's a small (about 1 inch) plastic cube. The wire from the starter button actuates this relay which in turn actuates your starter.

1978 Electra-Glide Starter initionally catches,

sounds like the starter is bad. if access to it easy for you then it can be removed and taken to your local repair shop and rebuilt. Or try locateing one on ebay.
