I just got this bike and it ran well the only 2 weeks i had it going last year. This year i took the tank off and had it painted and took the exhaust off and had it all rewelded and painted flat black. i put it all back on and the bike starts fine and turns over fine and runs in idle well and i can rev it up and it sounds great , but when i go from first to second it doesnt gain anymore power and it only gets up to 35 miles an hour! What could be the problem? When i bought it i went and had the carbs resynced and new carb boots put on and new plugs and wires! What could the problem be! There was a wire grounding out underneath of the bike and I had it rerouted away from the hot engine but it was rewired correctly color to color six different wires so that shouldnt have been a problem right! The battery does seem kind of week though! Its a new battery last fall though!
Forget the wiring. The key thing here is probably the painted gas tank. In all likelihood there was some trash that got into the tank related to the paint job. Do this > Carefully remove the water trap bowl from the petcock, (gas valve), and look inside the bowl. It may have some water in the bottom and some trash on top. Clean the bowl. Next, remove the petcock and clean it as well. Drain the carbs. Turn the gas on and wait a minute for the float bowls to fill.
Give it a try. It may be that the gas from the tank is restricted and can't refill the floats as fast as the engine needs. A second thought is the exhaust pipe. The bike will not run well if the exhaust is partly plugged up. Disconnect the exhaust and tick off the neighbors by going around the block without a muffler. The inside of the muffler may have collapsed when the welding was done.
Between the two solutions I think the exhaust is the more likely.
Please rate this solution as " FixYa " if you go riding tomorrow.
Check carb boots. could be an intake leak between carb and manifold. check plugs for colour. if any are whitish thats the cylinder to go for. good luck

thanks i checked the exhaust and it was pushing out some forceful air but i took them off anyways and it was still doing it i got one round around the block and it was fine but then i slowed down and started to go again and it started to do it again and you can tell when its going to be weak because the exhaust nsounds different so i believe that it is the petcock being clogged by sand when they blasted my tank, when i got the tank back i heard some rattling around inside and i tryed blowing it out so i probably didnt get it all. i am familiar with removeing the petcock, but is thewater trap bowl held in by the two screws on the petcock? If it is it shouldnt be that bad, and how do you drain the carbs? Thanks!
