Rheem Water Heaters - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support

Not for sure what your root cause was and I know it's a little late but I just suffered this same exact scenario on the same water heater. Storms came through, power went out, power came back on and the water heater keeps blowing the 3 amp fuses now. I removed all the cables and plugged them back in one at a time. When I plugged in the Fan Motor connector the fuses blew. Installed new fuses with the connector out, the Fan Motor was putting out 150 VDC through the connector port (on main control). I pulled the control from the unit and Q1 is visible blown and disintegrated on the control board. Obvious control design issue. I've ordered a new control and will put a surge protector on the heater now when the new control comes in. Very disappointed that this was not caught in controls testing within the manufacturers facility. New control is not very cheap. Half the cost of a new Heater. Hopefully the Fan Motor survived the high voltage with the fuses blowing. I'm putting this here for anyone else that suffers the same issue on this water heater or the Richmond equivalents as they use the same control.

Rheem fault code 11 - No ignition. Check to make sure there is gas to the unit and that the pressure is correct. Ensure the ignitor is operational before calling for service. Rheem fault code 16 - This is an over temperature warning which could indicate a possible clogged heat exchanger.

Turn the breaker off, count to 20 and turn it back on. If that doesn't fix the fault, maybe the element has failed, or the pressure switch that calls for the element to come on. Call Rheem service.

Its a water heater, a tank with a heating element in it, no reset button! Unless you have one of the new fangled high efficiency, money saving ones with LED Screen and computer.

For the former, power off the breaker and back on again. If that doesn't fix it, the element or thermostat has failed.

For the latter, Google for the manual

It is unlikely to be the hot water heater causing the smell, it is more likely the input (the well water) having excess sulfur, bacteria and/or organic material

Because it sits in the tank longer, the smell accumulates. If it is a bacterial source, the hot water tank may be a breeding ground for anerobic bacteria. Draining and doing a disinfect with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is the easiest and safest step

I had the same problem with my Paloma a year and a half after installation...contacted Rheem customer service (800-432-8373) and they recommened a local installer in my area. The technican diagnosed the problem as the "flow control valve"; he managed to get Rheem/Paloma to cover the part under warranty...I only had to shell out the money for the install.

i don't know. be very careful when working with propane.
if this happened to my freezer, i'd guess it was the thermostat. if safe and accessable, consider turning off
fuel supply. if adjustable, mark where thermost's setting is.
turn thermostat down and up or hot and cold a few times.
set the thrmostat at a few degrees lower than the mark.. restart the heater and see if tank will now provide constant hot water.

I was having the same problem untill I reallized it was my venting system. Test the water heater with no vent on top. Disconnect the vent pipe from the water heater and try turning on the hot water. the water heater needs a special adapter to vent the direct vent water heater. One other thing you can check is the gas pressure in your home. You have to have between 7 and 8 WC (water Column) for the tankless water heaters. You can call your gas supplier to find out what you have.

i think its "child lock" meaning u need to reset it somehow to clear it.

Rheem Water... | Answered on Oct 02, 2019

it is possible it needs a reset. 1. turn off the breaker to make sure there is no power to the unit 2. open the top cover and there will be a red button like this http://www.tonyhoover.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/water-heater-upper-thermostat.jpg push it. It may have a plastic cover over or around it, leave this in place it is insulation for the wiring.
close it up carefully and then turn on the power and see what happens.
