Wobble /sway My virago seems to wobble/sway from side to side when i am in slow traffic.Could this be a tyre or steering problem?

There's not a lot to go on here but there are several things that cause this. Usually this will be caused by a wheel or tyre problem and to confirm this I would swap the two front wheels over and see if the wobble transfers to the other side. If it does jack up the side with the wobble and spin the wheel to see if the wheel and tyre run true, by this I mean the wheel and tyre don't show signs of buckling. If tyre is distorted but not the wheel buy a new tyre. If the wheel is distorted buy a replacement wheel and probably a new tyre. If neither tyre nor wheel are distorted and the tyre has plenty of tread left, take the wheel to a tyre distributor and have it rebalanced. If when you swapped the wheels around the wobble remained on the same side then there is probably something wrong with the steering or suspension components. With the wheel off the ground and the ca? secured on axle stands have an assistant pull the wheel around while you look for play in the joints and the wheel bearing. Worn components need replacement. Out of all the problems I have highlighted here, the wheel balancing is the most likely cause of your issues.

Check for loose or worn suspension components. My XJ8 became unstable when a rear tie rod became worn. To check jack up rear wheels. If you can rock either of them left and right that might be your problem.

if this is a feeling like the wobble of a ducks rear end as it walks, it will be belt separation of the rear tyre/s ( bridgestone tyres are bad for it after a few years or partially worn tyre)
this is most noticeable at low road speeds
other than that have the rear suspension bushes and mounting bolts checked

Check the lower ball joints, lower control arm bushings, sway bar links, and sway bar bushings to the frame. Could be a broken sway bar also.

check the swing arm bearings where it pivots at the frame , have you got good condition tyres as sometimes they perish and the side walls give ? also i once put mettzler me33 tyre on the front and i got serious steering shake and when i put the old tyre on it went , ive never used that type again and had no problems ! P...

Check the wheel rim for distortion. Check the tyre for distortion. Check the wheel bearing for wear. Check the steering track rod end and ball joint for wear. Check the brake disk for distortion.
If you have done all that, then you will have likely already found the cause of the problem.

from the sound of it i dont think its the rack or the pump but more like a simple case of deformed tyres ,jack front up and spin the wheel to see if the tyre is perfectly round ,yes i know the tread looks ok but just try it and see then post what you have noticed ,for some reason tyres seem to deform more in later years than 40 yrs ago when crossply tyres were used

When a steering stabilizer goes bad, it will produce the exact wobble you have described. The one where you NEED to slow down to stop it, and then its fine. Its called "Death Wobble" in the car/truck enthusiast world.

Have you checked that? Typically called a steering stabilizer / steering dampener.

Steering dampner (thing that looks like a shock absorber mounted sideways) can cause this. Most good alignment shops will check front end components for wear (shame on them if they didn't) but sometimes what seems like "acceptable play" if added to other components in similar condition can add up to a total of unacceptable...If dampner does not help, I'd start eliminating anything with any wear. A side-note to this is about caster angle...I never like factory camber settings...it does make steering easier but I prefer setting caster at least one full degree (+) past factory settings. This makes the vehicle more stable at higher speeds and often eliminates tendency of wheels to wobble. (won't go into full details, but it's why you can ride a bicycle with "no hands" if you turn the fork around and try that you will land on your ****!) If adjustable, it involves placing equal thickness shims on both sides, behind rear of front lower control arms. Changing this may alter toe in, so that should be re-set.
