91 Toyota Previa AWD - Swap original engine for Previa Supercharged engine

I have a 1991 Toyota Previa AWD with the 5 speed manual transmission. I would like to change my original engine for the more powerful 1995 - 97 supercharged Previa engine. Other than changing my computer, is there anything else that i need to do ? Since the manual transmission was not offered with the supercharged engine, will the gearing be a problem ?
Looking forward to your advice ... Much appreciated !

I do a lot of work on Toyota Previa before; including rebuilt engine, swapping engine and transmission and lot of things in between, but never swap a normal aspirated engine to a supercharged engine or diesel. Since i have some experience in Previa, I would like to share my opinion with you regarding your plan to swapping the normal aspirated Previa engine to a Supercharged engine. When you do a swapp like that, you will not only be dealing with just swapping engine, but some wiring, computer, throttle body, air cleaner assembly, extra frame and pulley on the accessory items, transmission as well as a right rear end to get the correct gear ratio to accomodate the new engine and transmission. I can go on even more, but let me tell you this, beside less headache, it would definitely cheaper if you were to find a Supercharged Previa and fix it up. However, if you are totally motivated to do this project, keep in mind, this engine swap will be a long term and time consuming project.l I wish you best of luck and have fun!

I'm thinking of swapping out the auto on my supercharged for a manual so I'm kind of in the same boat. I think you will have a lot of work to do fitting all the supercharger components into the bay of your van. The layout of the accessories is different for a super charged vs non-supercharged. You'd need to replace most of those from the donor vehicle. I'm not sure how the wiring would be worked for the S/C engine since it has only ever been paired with the auto tranny. Is there anyone else that could inform on that point?

How can you tell the differences between the cylinder head of a non-super charged and a supercharge Toyota Previa?

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. I am Toyota Ed; I will be assisting you today.

The differences 'side by side' are negligible. The main difference, one that you really cannot determine by the eye, is the size of the combustion chamber. On a supercharged Previa, the compression ratio is markedly lower, because of the supercharged air being sent into the engine. The combustion chamber on a supercharged engine is slightly larger, and the piston domes are shorter.

Note: All turbo and S/C engines have lower compression ratios than a normally asperated engine.

In short, putting a supercharged head on a normally asperated engine will give you very bad acceleration and drivability, due to the increased combustion chamber size. The lower compression of the S/C engine's head on a normal engine will have bad idle, poor acceleration, and bad hesitation.

To tell the difference, you need both variants of cylinder head, and measure the cubic centimeters of the combustion chambers with a liquid. The one that holds more volume is the S/C head.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance today. I hope that my answer helpd you out.

Whare do i find the engine number on a toyota previa???

well if you are loking for the v.i.n. it will be lower driver side corner of wndshield and on sticker inside driver's door jamb. if it's the engine code your looking for this is it 2.4 L 2TZ-FE I4 2.4 L 2TZ-FZE I4 supercharged. if your previa is a 1995 it would be the supercharged model as that was the only engine available that year. if this was helpful please rate 4 thumbs.

I have a 91 previa and the battery light came on

sounds like you poped the main fuse in the under hood fuse panel. before that the battery light on in a toyota pretty much points to an alternator problem.

Toyota previa 1991

the oil should be black, brown or gold(new) with no other colors in it. shouldnt be milky or streaky. the trans fluid should be light red or semi light red.as for the engine being oily its hard to discern unless you rinse it off to metal and drive it. if you mean the oil pan has black oil on it then it may be ok.
