If it's in limp in mode it won't shift out of 2nd gear. Get the trouble codes read. The solenoid pack is a pretty common failure. But don't just throw parts at it. Get the codes first.
Sounds like a plastic grommet is broken. You'll have to raise the car and check the cables/linkage at each end. You'll probably find on one end that the grommet is missing. And you probably not be able to buy just the grommet. you will have to replace the entire cable.
sounds like third gear went south for the winter and it is not coming back. take it to a tranny shop and don't be too surprised when they hit you with a repair estimate of a $1000.00 and up as they might just have to overhaul the whole thing(sorry i know that this is bad news but itis what it is)
