Check to see if the security light is on. Sounds like you have an antitheft mode problem. If you can jump it on the starter but not at ignition, sounds like the security is blocking you.
If there is a light on your dash that says security when you put the key forward, read this info.

So the Security light is on or flashing in your vehicle and you are looking at 1 of 3 things. Either the vehicle won't crank over and start, It cranks but dies in a few seconds, or your vehicle shuts off while driving scaring the **** out of you. You have now experienced GM's worst security system ever created. GM's security, also known as Passlock Passkey or Vats.

There are 3 parts in this system.
1.The CHIPKEY
Normally a black resister chip in key which "communicates" to the lock cylinder. Sometimes is hidden in the plastic part of keys in new models. Same concept, might say PK1 PK2 PK3 PL or something similar to that. The newer ones work on frequency. Same thing tho.
2.The LOCK CYLINDER
Inside there are pins that read the chip in the key or the part that reads the frequency on new models. This then "communicates" to the TDM)
3.The TDM
Theft Deterrant Module-Sometimes called the "computer" or "brain". This is the part that sends the signal (**NOTE**) to your car and allows your car to start or continue running depending on your type of system.
If any of these parts are not communicating properly, your SECURITY light will come on and shut down your vehicle. The idea being, that without the chipped key or FOB key, the vehicle wont start and cant be "hotwired" or stolen. Pretty nice when working, but these systems are flawed and the average life is 6-10 years. Every single aspect of this system is expensive to replace and can only be worked on by "authorized" GM service men with out voiding warrenty. Most garages dont even touch them and if they do,
they will sell you every part they can before "fixing" the problem/
*QUICK FIX TRICKS*
1st trick
Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down with use and so do the keys causing the security to fail.

2nd trick
(if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my Buick for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, I'm sorry I have no quick fix...

*PERMINANT FIX*
Well since the lifespan of these systems are so short, and are extremely expensive to fix, and in my opinion far worse of a threat to owners than theives, my only perminant suggestion is to eliminate it completely. After a year of 10 minute tricks and a "key bypass" that lasted 2 months and stranded me out of state, ($375 tow charge) i have only one good suggestion. After surfing the web for hours thru forums and websites i came across http://newrockies.com/passkey to the starter or injectors and so on. Thus eliminating the ENTIRE system completely. I came upon a fork in my road. A TDM for $600 in my $1000 car or the $200 bypass. Or throw my car away. Lets say i now drive a Buick with the chip ripped out of the key and the TDM sitting in my glovebox for show
and tell. If you have any questions or anything else. Comment on this post
and i'll get an E-mail to reply to you. If you do choose to buy the bypass,
i have pictures of what a TDM looks like and will definately help you when
installing the newrockies bypass. Good luck
Here is a list of known effected cars that can be fixed with the
newrockies bypass. This is the same list from the site and updates
frequently.

Have had the same problem recently of car starting but shuts down immediatly or wont stay running without foot on the gas. After 5 hours of a cert. mechanic at my house working on it without a fix I did some online investigating and came across this. Ran and dug out my spare key which is rarely used, said a little prayer and voila! The car started and stayed running. I called the mechanic who hadnt even made it home yet and he was shocked. The spare key gave me a check engine light which he helped me eliminate by doing a few steps with the key in the ignition. My boyfriend was also shocked when I told him I fixed my car! Lol. THANK YOU!!

Why car wont crank, but can smell gas

IT IS LOOKS LIKE A FUEL PRESSURE LEAKING INSIDE THE ENGINE OR DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTOR LEAKING . TRY DISCONNECTING THE FUEL PUMP RELAY. AND CRANK THE ENGINE IF ALWAYS CRANK WITH OUT OF FUEL (CRANK WITHOUT START) YOU HAVE FUEL LEAK INSIDE THE ENGINE
REMOVE THE INJECTORS RAIL UP EVERYTHING CONNECTED,PUT BACK THE FUEL PUMP RELAY TURN THE SWITCH ON AND FIND WICH ONE IS LEAKING. (GASOLINE IS FLAMMABLE TAKE CARE)

Car was cranking fine then I shut it off went in a store and came out and it wouldn't turnover, so I thought the battery was dead so I got someone to jump me off. But when we put the cables on and waited a...

Hold on!!! 3 elements, power/spark/fire, fuel, air. If the car cranks, there is power, if it wont ignite it's usually the fuel system, did you check your fuel level? If you smell gas and its cranking then theres an air problem but thats rare. And people, if you have a car sit for a month or so, yes you may end up with a drained battery as some cars have alarm systems built in. or like my 79 vette a phantom power leach. And please jump your vehicles properly, first leave jumping car running, connect red/+ to good battery then Red+ to bad car then neg black- to bad car battery terminal then black to frame of good car. never hook up cars while jumper car is not running as the drain is immediate and you may end up with 2 dead batteries. and just because you start dead car doesnt mean the battery is charged for the next start up, you have to charge it with alternator by driving at least a good hour. if your battery is good then go to fuel system...start with the tank hole...is there gas, next is pump, then filter then carb or injection but fuel regulators and hoses are there too. good luck

Car Won't Start

We found online a problem that's very common with these cars that has to do with the security system. It shuts off the fuel to the engine ???????? There would be a SECURITY light lit on the instrument cluster if that was the problem . IS IT ? Does it have spark , Pull two plug wires off of the same coil an crank the engine , turn the key to start an spin the engine .

My car wont crank, replaced solinoid and starter tested good, and battery is good, but when i turn key will not crank, just clicks.

Heres a good test to test the solenoid and the starter, make sure the car is in park and turn the key on, using a screw driver jump the solenoid and see if it spins the engine or clicks, if you look at the solenoid you will see a small wire and the two connections for battery cables, locate the connection that the battery goes to ,the other big connection will be the cable to starter, take the battery connection and jump it to the small wire connection, if it clicks then you must have a bad starter or bad connection at the starter, also another test is to turn the headlights on and try to start the car while someone watches the lights, if the lights go out then you have a bad connection at battery or the ground to engine. start with these tests and let me know what happens, good luck.

Turn the key on and the lights radio fuel pump everything comes on but it will not crank, replaced neutral switch, checked ignition switch, hot wire to relay center under hood, if you jump out the starter...

Sounds like the starter solinoid especialy if the starter works when you jump it. I dont know if you can buy just a solinoid for that particular car, but its a cheap place to start if you can. If not you should be able to get a whole remaned starter for around a hundred bucks. Hope this helps.

1999 Chevy S10 cranks but wont start

A very common problem on the 99 S10 is a leaky fuel pressure regulator in the intake plenum. What happens is when the truck sits for a few hours or more the regulator leaks all of the fuel in the fuel injection system into the intake air plenum. This does 2 things, 1 it has no fuel pressure when starting and 2 it floods the air intake with raw fuel. Sometimes if you turn the key on wait 3 seconds then turn key off then turn key back on and just turn key to crank starter for a split second and wait 3 seconds.do this 3 times to repressurize fuel system then crank to start(you will hear fuel pump buzz each time you do this.also you may have leaky fuel injectors. Try to crank engine with the gas pedel to the floor. This will tell the computer to stop spraying fuel trhough the injectors and it will start. Joe ASE Master Tech

Starter wont engage

The problem is either the starter solinoid (located on fender near battery) or you are not getting power to the "s" terminal on the starter solinoid from the ignition switch. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery you'll follow it to the solinoid. Remove the small wire from the terminal marked "s" on the solinoid and using a screwdriver jump from "s" terminal (not the wire) to where positive battery cable connects to solinoid. (with battery connected). If starter doesn't do anything the solinoid is bad. If starter cranks then you are not getting voltage from ignition switch through "s" terminal wire.
