You may have a damaged disc or one that the player can not read either from scratches or the type of CD if it is one burned on a computer. CD-R is the most compatible with many stereos for both home and auto.
Its possible the cd player is defective, I would get a paper clip and find the eject hole that is on every cd player. It might be hidden along the lip of where you stick the cd into the machine. Once you have the cd out, put in a cd that you have played before or on another cd player. Once you know that the player works or does not work you can figure out if you are going to replace it yourself or have the dealer do it.
I had an identical problem. Turns out my battery did not have sufficient voltage/amperage to operate the CD player......although it would start the enjine just fine. When I replaced the battery the CD worked fine!
