When filling gas tank on 2004 toyota corolla it keeps shutting off as if the gas tank is full, can only put in a little at a time.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2013

I had this problem two years ago and the only thing that helped was to replace the charcoal cannister. My mechanic removed the entire filler system and found not blockages or anything else wrong. It is doing it again and he took apart today to no result. He even put a camera in the entire system and found no problems. What could this be?

When taking gas cap off give it a few seconds for the pressure to escape from the tank. Also you may not be putting the nozzle in far enough for the fume preventor(the rubber thing on the nozzle)to press down. That will make it stop pumping gas. Sometimes you have to press the rubber down when it is cold out.

Gas tank will not fill up on 2001 ford expedition

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

When putting gas in my car (2004 pontiac grand prix, 3.8) the gas pump keeps shutting off like my car is full when its not. Any suggestion to what that means?

This is not a bad thing. You have a very tight emissions system. You know your car at this point better than anyone else. You can try this, don't put the gas nozzle very tight into the gas filler. Put the nozzle into your tank and just pull it out a fraction of an inch. This will give the fuel tank the ability to BREATH while your filling the tank .This should solve your problem. GOOD LUCK.

Every time i try to but gas into my car the pump keeps shutting off eveyr to seconds.I ws wondering y this happens

The pump is shutting off because of back pressure. There are usually two lines going to the fuel pipe. The big pipe that the gas goes down and a smaller vent pipe that the air that is being displaced in the tank comes up. If this is blocked or is not working correctly , enough pressure can build up to shut off the nozzle of the gas pump. The gas nozzle thinks your tank is full.

At 75,000 miles my 04Avalon gas tank will only fill 3/4 full. The gas pump cuts off and Ican keep clicking it for about 50 times to try continue filling the tank. Is there some remedy for this?

The float on your fuel pump is not working right the only cure is to replace the float not pump just the float and you will need to drop the fuel tank to do so.

When I fill-up my ford contour the gas pump keeps clicking off. can only put in a little gas at a time

Check the vent tube which is alongside the gas fill tube. It's either kinked, bent, pinched, or some how blocked, not allowing easy flow of gas into the tank. Once the tube is open, you will not have trouble. You don't give the year, it's possible it needs to be replaced (comes as a unit with the fill tube) if rusting badly.

I can't put gas in my car without the pump shutting off every five seconds. I think the metal flap where you put the gas pump into the car fell into the line. what can i do to get it out?

On most modern gas pumps there is a sensor in the tip of the nozzle. When it feels to much pressure or liquid it shuts the pump off. When you are filling your tank you need to leave a little room for air to come out. Try to not put the nozzle in as far and see if that will work. You will only need to leave a little bit of room. Hope it helps!
