I had a problem similar to that described. I took my cherokee to my local Jeep dealer who having charged around £1000 sent me away with the a warning light still showing. Several independant units advised I should dispose of the vehicle because this intermittand issue is common. Finally I fould a Jeep dealer with a technician who actually understood the cause of the intermittant issue. He removed, cleaned and refitted all the earth (ground) conections to the chassis and the problem was cured. Time to complete 1 hour! !0K miles later all is still good. A DIY job if only I had known.
You will need to inspect the wiper transmission (this is the part the electric motor turns that swipes the wipers across the window) under the cowl in front of the windshield, it has most likely broken or come loose from link rod or the motor shaft connection came loose.
Sounds like you damaged the gear drive that operates the wiper arms, time for new wiper motor assembly is my guess. Don't use the wipers to brush off snow, very bad idea, the drive gears are plastic and on this old dog very brittle from age.

The windshield wiper circuit has an circuit breaker in it, under heavy load this breaker trips to protect the wiper motor, when the motor cools, the breaker resets automatically restoring proper wiper action.
you have damaged the gearbox mechanism by the sound of it ,on teh end of the motor is a gearboc and i think you burnt one of the tracks that self park hence its not working right and only a new motor complete will cure it as i dont think this gearbox cover can be removed on this vehicle
clean the snow off the widows completely. they also may have frozen to the window. a very common problem. try lifting up on the wipers, each one to see if they will come on.if this does'nt help, look for a blown wiper fuse. hope this helps and never pour warm or hot water on your window to remove snow or ice!thank you for choosing fixya.com
