Water Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old. 2.2L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the cooling system into an approved container.
  3. Remove all accessory drive belts or the serpentine belt.
  4. Remove the alternator and bracket. For details, please refer to Section 2 of this manual.
  5. Unscrew the water pump pulley mounting bolts and then pull off the pulley.
  6. Unfasten the mounting bolts, then remove the water pump.

    To install:
  8. Place a 1?8 in. (3mm) wide bead of RTV sealant on the water pump sealing surface or install a new gasket, on models so equipped. Install the pump and tighten the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  9. Install the water pump pulley, then tighten the mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10. As outlined in Section 2, install the alternator and bracket.
  11. Install the drive belts or serpentine belt, as applicable.
  12. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.
2.3L and 2.4L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Detach the oxygen sensor connector.
  3. Properly drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing for more complete coolant drain.
  4. Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  6. Remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Break loose the manifold to exhaust pipe spring loaded bolts using a 13mm box wrench.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle. NOTE: It is necessary to relieve the spring pressure from 1 bolt prior to removing the second bolt. If the spring pressure is not relieved, it will cause the exhaust pipe to twist and bind up the bolt as it is removed.
  9. Unfasten the two radiator outlet pipe-to-water pump cover bolts.
  10. Remove the manifold to exhaust pipe bolts from the exhaust pipe flange as follows:
    1. Unscrew either bolt clockwise 4 turns.
    2. Remove the other bolt.
    3. Remove the first bolt. NOTE: On the 2.4L engines, DO NOT rotate the flex coupling more than 4°or damage may occur.
  11. Pull down and back on the exhaust pipe to disengage it from the exhaust manifold bolts.
  12. Remove the radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan and transaxle. If equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold brace. Leave the lower radiator hose attached and pull down on the outlet pipe to remove it from the water pump. Leave the radiator outlet pipe hang.
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14. Unfasten the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head retaining nuts, then remove the exhaust manifold, seals and gaskets.
  15. For the 2.4L engine, remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner. For details, please refer to the procedure located later in this section.
  16. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove thedo i need to lift the engine up to acces the - 87953070.gifto-timing chain housing nuts. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly, then separate the two pieces.     To install:
  17. Thoroughly clean and dry all mounting surfaces, bolts and bolt holes. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the cover and tighten the bolts finger-tight.
  18. Lubricate the splines of the water pump with clean grease and install the assembly to the engine using new gaskets. Install the mounting bolts and nuts finger-tight.
  19. Lubricate the radiator outlet pipe O-ring with antifreeze and slid the pipe onto the water pump cover. Install the bolts finger-tight.
  20. With all gaps closed, tighten the bolts, in the following sequence, to the proper values:
    1. Pump assembly-to-chain housing nuts - 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    2. Pump cover-to-pump assembly - 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Cover-to-block, bottom bolt first - 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4. Radiator outlet pipe assembly-to-pump cover - 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  21. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold. Make sure to following the tightening sequence and torque specifications given in the exhaust manifold procedure located in this section.
  22. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  23. Index the exhaust manifold bolts into the exhaust pipe flange.
  24. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Install the exhaust pipe flange bolts evenly and gradually to avoid binding. Turn the bolts in until fully seated.
  25. Connect the radiator outlet pipe to the transaxle and oil pan. Install the exhaust manifold brace, if removed.
  26. On the 2.4L engine, install the timing chain tensioner and front cover.
  27. Install the lower heat shield.
  28. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  29. Fasten the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  30. Tighten the manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts to specification.
  31. Install the upper heat shield.
  32. Attach the oxygen sensor connector.
  33. Fill the radiator with coolant until it comes out the heater hose outlet at the thermostat housing. Then connect the heater hose. Leave the rado i need to lift the engine up to acces the - prev.gifap off.
  34. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Rudo i need to lift the engine up to acces the - next.gifhicle until the thermostat opens, fill the radiator and recovery tank to their proper levels, then turn the engine off.
  35. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.

How do I put a water pump on 2.4 grand am

There are a lot of steps, and you need to take your time. You will need access to a lift or jack stand, and make sure you keep the work area clean and organised, taking photos of the timing system will make your life easier when it comes to re-timing the engine.

Water Pump Replacement (2.4L)
Removal Procedure
  1. Drain the coolant. Recover the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  2. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  3. Remove the coolant intake pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Inlet Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  6. Remove the timing chain and tensioner. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L. (see below procedure)
  7. Remove the water pump cover-to-cylinder block bolts.
  8. Remove water pump pipe to cylinder block bolt.
  9. Remove the 3?water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover assembly.
  11. Remove the water pump cover-to-coolant pump assembly bolts.
  12. Clean all sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
    Important: Before you install the coolant pump, read the entire procedure. Follow the tightening sequences in order to avoid part damage and to provide proper sealing.

  1. Install the pump cover bolts. Hand tighten the bolts.
  2. Install water pump cover assembly.
  3. Install the cover-to-block bolts. Hand tighten the bolts.
  4. Install the coolant pump-to-timing chain housing nuts. Hand tighten the nuts.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  6. Torque in sequence as follows:
    1. Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
      Tighten
      Tighten water pump to timing chain housing nuts to 26?Y (19?lb?ft).
    2. Tighten the pump cover-to-pump assembly bolts.
      Tighten
      Tighten the water pump cove to water pump bolts to 14?Y (124?lb?in).
    3. Tighten the coolant pump cover-to-engine block bolts. Tighten the bottom bolt first.
      Tighten
      Tighten water pump to engine block bolts to 26?Y (19?lb?ft).
  7. Install heater hose to pipe on water pump.
  8. Install the exhaust manifold and install new gaskets. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  9. Install oil level indicator tube and indicator. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.4L.
  10. Connect the brake vacuum pipe to the cam housing.
  11. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Install catalytic converter to to manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  13. Install the coolant inlet pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Inlet Pipe Replacement.
  14. Install the timing chain and tensioner. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Connect the oxygen sensor connector.
  17. Fill cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  18. Inspect the system for leaks.
Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement
Removal Procedure
    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
    Notice: The timing chain on the LD9 (VIN T) Twin Cam Engine is not to be replaced with the timing chain from any other model year. The timing sprockets are different on the Twin Cam engine and the shape of the links matches the sprockets. Engine damage may result if the wrong timing chain is used. The timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket must be marked so that they are reinstalled in the same side facing out at the time of reassembly.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front of the engine, normal rotation) until the camshaft sprocket timing dowel pin holes align with the holes in the timing chain housing.
  4. Set the crankshaft sprocket keyway pointing upwards. Align with the centerline of the cylinder bores. This is the timed position.
  5. Remove the timing chain guides.
  6. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Ensure that all of the slack in the timing chain is above the tensioner assembly.
  8. Remove the timing chain tensioner bolts and the tensioner.
  9. Remove the tensioner shoe. Use a small locking ring plier in order to engage the hole in the locking tab and remove the shoe from the stud.
  10. Notice: Do not attempt to pry the sprocket off the camshaft or damage to the sprocket or chain housing could occur.
    Important: Mark the timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket prior to removal. If the chain or the crankshaft sprocket is installed with the wear pattern in the opposite direction, noise and increased wear may occur.
  11. Mark the crankshaft sprocket and the timing chain outer surface.
  12. Remove the timing chain.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Holding the intake camshaft sprocket with J 39579, remove the sprocket bolt and washer.
  15. Remove the washer from the bolt and rethread the bolt back into the camshaft.
  16. Using a 3-jaw puller and the relief holes in the sprocket, remove the intake camshaft sprocket.
  17. Repeat this procedure for the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
  18. Clean the old sealant from the bolt with a wire brush.
  19. Clean the threaded hole in the camshaft with a round nylon bristle brush.
  20. Inspect the parts for wear. Replace the parts as necessary.Some scoring of the timing chain shoe and the guides is normal.
  21. Replace the timing chain shoe or guides if the scoring exceeds 1.12?mm (45?in).
Installation Procedure


  1. Use Adhesive/Sealant Compound GM?P/N?12345493 or equivalent on the camshaft sprocket bolt. Install the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts with the marked surface showing.Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the retaining bolts and washers to the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 70?Y (52?lb?ft) while holding the sprockets with the J 39579.
  4. Install the J 36800 through the holes in the camshaft sprockets into the holes in the timing chain housing. This will position the camshaft for correct timing.
  5. If the camshafts are out of position (you must rotate the camshaft more than 1/8?turn in order to install the alignment dowel pins), use the following procedure:
    1. Rotate the crankshaft 90?degrees clockwise off of the TDC in order to give the valves adequate clearance to open.
    2. Once the camshafts are in position and the dowels installed, rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise back to the top dead center.

  6. Notice: Do not rotate the crankshaft clockwise to TDC. Valve or piston damage could occur.
    Important: The side of the timing chain that was marked during removal must be showing when the chain is installed.
  7. Install the timing chain over the exhaust camshaft sprocket, around the coolant pump, and around the crankshaft sprocket.
    1. Remove the alignment dowel pin from the intake camshaft.
    2. Using the J 39579, rotate the intake camshaft sprocket counterclockwise enough in order to slide the timing chain over the intake camshaft sprocket.
    3. Release the J 39579. The length of the chain between the 2?camshaft sprockets will tighten.
    4. If properly timed the intake camshaft alignment dowel pin should slide in easily. If the dowel pin does not fully index, the camshafts are not timed correctly and the procedure must be repeated.
  8. Leave the alignment dowel pins installed.
  9. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  10. The timing marks on the crankshaft and on the cylinder block should be aligned when the slack is removed from the chain linking the intake camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket. If the marks are not aligned, move the chain one tooth forward or rearward, remove the slack and re-examine the marks.

  11. Important: Use the following steps in order to reset the timing chain tensioner assembly to the zero position.
  12. Reset the timing chain tensioner assembly.
    1. Insert the tensioner plunger assembly into the tensioner housing.
    2. With the tensioner plunger fully extended, turn the complete assembly upside down on a bench or other flat surface.
    3. With the plunger face against the workbench, press firmly on the bottom of the tensioner housing.
    4. Compress the plunger until the plunger is seated flush in the tensioner.

  13. Check the plunger to make sure the plunger is out of the cylinder at the correct dimension. The correct dimension for the plunger to extend out of the cylinder is 1.7?mm (0.07?in) maximum.

  14. Loosely install the tensioner assembly and bolts to the timing chain housing.
  15. Install the timing chain tensioner shoe on the stud.
  16. Apply hand pressure to the timing chain tensioner shoe until the locking tab seats in the groove in the stud.
  17. Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts. Do Not overtighten.
    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10?Y (89?lb?in).


  18. Important: If the timing chain tensioner is not released from the installation position, engine damage will occur when the engine is started.
  19. Release the timing chain tensioner plunger.
    1. Using a flat blade screwdriver, cotter pin remover, or similar tool, press firmly against the face of the timing chain tensioner plunger.
    2. Important: If the timing chain tensioner cannot be depressed, the plunger is not properly reset and the procedure for resetting the timing chain tensioner should be repeated.
    3. Depress the timing chain tensioner plunger until the plunger is bottomed out in the bore of the timing chain tensioner.
    4. Release the tensioner plunger. the plunger should press firmly against the back of the timing chain tensioner shoe.
  20. Remove J 36800 from the camshaft sprockets.
  21. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 2?full rotations. Align the crankshaft keyway with the mark on the cylinder block, and reinstall the alignment dowel pins. The pins should slide in easily if the engine is timed correctly.

  22. Install the timing chain guides.
  23. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
  24. Connect the negative battery cable.
    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16?Y (12?lb?ft).

I have a 87 ford tmpo thatt wont start. i have spark and fuel. the water pump belt broke and my son could not get it started ever since. the compression on the plugs is low at 35psi i am trying to...

That has a timing chain not a timing belt.

I am betting that the vehicle was severely overheated when the water pump belt broke causing the loss of compression. If you pull the valve cover and the camshaft is moving than the timing chain is not the problem. It would be highly unlikely for a timing chain to slip and/or keep turning the cam if it did slip.

It is almost impossible to do the timing chain cover with the motor in the car. You will need to remove the sway bar mounts from the sub frame and the bracket that protects the fuel pressure regulator. You will than be able to get the motor low enough to remove the crank pulley.

REPLACE WATER PUMP ON A 1999 OLDSMOBILE ALERO. FIRST YOU HAVE TO DRAIN COOLANT SYSTEM IN A LARGE DRAIN. RADIATOR DRAIN PLUG SHOULD BE ON THE BOTTOM ON PASSENGER SIDE. THEN RAISE THE VECHICLE SUPPORT VECHICLE WITH JACKSTANDS. REMOVE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD FROM THE ENGINE. CAUTION DO NOT ROTATE THE FLEX COUPLING ON THE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE MORE THAN 4 DEGREE OR DAMAGE TO THE FLEX COUPLING MAY OCCUR. REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT AND THE COOLANT INLET PIPE FROM THE WATER PUMP HOUSING AND SEPARATE THE ASSEMBLY FROM THE ENGINE. LOWER THE VECHICLE REMOVE THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE FROM THE CAMSHAFT HOUSING. REMOVE THE FRONT TIMING CHAIN COVER AND THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FROM THE ENGINE. CAUTION THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER MUST BE REMOVED TO UNLOAD CHAIN TENSION BEFORE REMOVING THE WATER PUMP FROM THE HOUSING OTHERWISE THE WATER PUMP WILL BECOME JAMMED IN THE TIMING CHAIN HOUSING. REMOVE THE HEATER OUTLET PIPE FROM THE WATER PUMP COVER. REMOVE THE WATER PUMP COVER BOLTS FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THE WATER PUMP. REMOVE WATER PUMP RETAINING NUTS AND SEPARATE THE WATER PUMP FROM THE TIMING CHAIN HOUSING. CLEAN THE SEALING SURFACES OF ALL GASKET MATERIAL ON THE WATER PUMP, WATER PUMP COVER AND THE TIMING CHAIN HOUSING. WIPE THE MATING SURFACES WITH A RAG SATURATED LACQUER THINNER OR ACETONE. YOU CAN BUY THESE CHEMICAL AT LOWES OR WALMART DEPARTMENT WHERE THEY SELL PAINTS. FIRST INSTALL THE WATER PUMP COVER AND GASKET TO THE WATER PUMP ON THE BENCH BUT LEAVE THE BOLTS FINGER TIGHT. APPLY A THIN LAYER OF RTV SEALANT TO BOTH SIDES OF THE NEW GASKET AND INSTALL THE GASKET ON THE WATER PUMP. WAIT FOR RTV SEALANT SET UP DRY FIRST. POSITION WATER PUMP AND WATER PUMP COVER ASSEMBLY INTO TIMING CHAIN HOUSING ENGAGING THE WATER PUMP SPROCKET IN THE TIMING CHAIN, AND INSTALL THE NUTS FINGER TIGHT. USE CAUTION TO ENSURE THAT THE GASKET DOESNT SLIP OUT OF POSITION. LEAVE THE NUTS LOOSE TO ALLOW REPOSITIONING WHEN THE BLOCK BOLTS ARE INSTALLED IN THE NEXT STEP. INSTALL THE WATER PUMP COVER TO ENGINE BLOCK BOLTS AND TIGHTEN THEM BY HAND. LUBRICATE THE O - RING ON THE HEATER OUTLET PIPE WITH COOLANT AND INSTALL IT INTO THE WATER PUMP COVER. HAND TIGHTEN THE BOLTS. NOW THAT THE ENTIRE WATER PUMP HOUSING ASSEMBLY IS INSTALLED AND IS FITTED AGAINST THE ENGINE BLOCK. TIGHTEN BOLTS CRISS CROSS SEQUENCE TO INSURE PROPER SEAL TORQUE WATER PUMP TO TIMING CHAIN HOUSING NUTS TO 19 FT LBS .NOW TORQUE WATER PUMP COVER TO WATER PUMP HOUSING BOLTS TO 124 INCH POUNDS. TORQUE WATER PUMP COVER TO ENGINE BLOCK BOLTS 19 FT LBS. TORQUE 124 INCH POUNDS THE RADIATOR OUTLET PIPE TO WATER PUMP HOUSING. INSTALL THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER AND COVER. INSTALL THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. INSTALL THE EXHAUST PIPE TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. WHEN ALL IS DONE. START POURING COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR OR COOLANT OVER FLOW JUG.CHECK FOR LEAKS. IF IS GOOD KEEP ADDING COOLANT TO RADIATOR OR OVER FLOW RESERVOIR UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING. NOW START ENGINE. WATCH THE COOLANT LEVEL WHEN START DROPPING ADD MORE COOLANT IN RADIATOR OR OVERFLOW JUG. WHEN COOLANT STOP DROPPING INSTALL RADIATOR CAP OR OVERFLOW JUG CAP. LET ENGINE IDLE UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPENS WATCH TEMPERATURE GAUGE WHEN TEMPERATURE GAUGE RISING TO OVERHEATING. TURN OFF ENGINE WAIT A WHILE TAKE A LARGE RAG SLOWLY OPEN RADIATOR CAP A LITTLE TO RELEASE PRESSURE. WHEN PRESSURE RELEASE REMOVE RADIATOR CAP ADD MORE COOLANT. START ENGINE LET IDLE WATCH TEMP GAUGE. TEMP GAUGE START RISING AGAIN TURN OFF ENGINE LET IT SET A WHILE ADD MORE COOLANT. TO RADIATOR. WHEN ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE STOP RISING AND THERMOSTAT OPENS YOUR COOLANT SYSTEM AIR IS BLED OUT. JUST LET VECHICLE SET A LITTLE CHECK COOLANT LEVEL MAKE ITS CORRECT BEFORE START DRIVING VECHICLE. How to replace water pump 2003 alero. 3400 engine.

Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold..
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Right front wheel and tire assembly.
    • Right front fender liner. chevy_cav_02-04_accescover.gif

    • Access plate on the water pump sprocket from the timing cover.
  6. Install J 43651 water pump sprocket holder or equivalent to the water pump sprocket.
  7. Use the access plate bolts to attach J43651 to the engine front cover.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bolts that secure the sprocket to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine front cover to the water pump.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump. chevy_cav_02-04_wp.gif

    • 2 Bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Water pump.
To Install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the hub to align the water pump sprocket.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump.
    • 2 bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump.
    • Front cover bolt and the bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft lbs (20 Nm).
    • 2 of the bolts that secure the water pump sprocket to the water pump.
  3. Remove the threaded stud.
  4. Install the last bolt.
    • Tighten the bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
  5. Remove J 43651.
  6. Install the access plate on the water pump sprocket to the timing cover.
  7. Install the access plate bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 18 in lbs (10 Nm).
  8. Install the front fender liner.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the coolant intake pipe as follows:
    1. Remove the coolant inlet pipe bolts.
    2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the engine splash shield.
    4. Remove the bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block brace and remove the brace.
    5. Remove the radiator hose from the coolant inlet pipe.
    6. Remove the coolant inlet pipe to oil pan bolt.
    7. Remove the coolant inlet pipe, thermostat and seal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner.
  8. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts.
  11. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly. Separate the two pieces after removal.
  12. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
  2. Install and hand tighten the pump cover mounting bolts.
  3. Install water pump cover assembly.
  4. Install and hand tighten the cover-to-block mounting bolts.
  5. Install and hand tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
    • Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing mounting nuts to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-water pump mounting bolts to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-engine block bolts starting with the bottom bolt first to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  6. Install the heater hose to the water pump pipe.
  7. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the oil level indicator and tube.
  9. Connect the brake vacuum tube to the cam housing.
  10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  11. Install the catalytic converter.
  12. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
    • Tighten the inlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft lb (26 Nm). Tighten the coolant inlet pipe bolt to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
  13. Install the timing chain and tensioner.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  16. Fill cooling system and check the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
    • Water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
    • Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump gasket and pump.
    • Water pump bolts.
      1. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Water pump pulley and bolt until snug.
    • Drive belt.
  2. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

How to replace water pump

1. Drain coolant from engine.
2. Remove water pump drain plug. It is located on the front of the block just above the A/C compressor and about 2 o'clock of the crankshaft pulley.
3. Place a floor jack under engine (be sure to use a piece of wood in between jack and oil pan). Remove the right side engine mounting, mounting bracket and nuts.
4. Remove the drive belts and idler pulley bracket.
5. Remove the two black covers on the front of the engine. The one towards the radiator will have the water pump behind it and the one towards the thermo barrier will have the timing chain tenioner behind it.
6. Push in the tensioner sleeve, apply a stopper pin so it does not return ( a paper clip will work ).
7. Remove the tensioner (2 - 10mm bolts )
8. Remove the 3 water pump bolts.
9. Turn the crankshaft pulley approximately 20 degrees backwards to put slack in the chain to give clearance for the water pump.
10. Install the two M8 bolts into the threaded holes in the water pump (the upper hole and the lower hole)
11. Tighten the M8 bolts by turning half turn alternately until the water pump becomes loose. Lift up water pump and remove it. Make sure you move the timing chain away from the pump to remove it. Do not worry about engine timing. It will not effect it at all. The water pump is not part of timing the engine, nor will the chain losse contact with the crankshaft gear.
12. Make sure to use two new "O" rings on the water pump.
13. Install water pump and tighten bolts (63.4 - 85.1 inch pounds)
14. Return the crankshaft pulley to its original position by turning it 20 degrees forward.
15. Install timing chain tensioner, then remove the stopper pin ( paper clip)
16. Place sealer on the black covers and reinstall.
17. Reinstall engine mounting.
18. Reinstall drive belts.
19. Fill with new coolant.
20. Start engine and check for leaks. (Engine will be noise at first until the tensioner fills with engine oil. This is normal.)

THE 2.4L AND 2.5L ENGINES.YOU HAVE TO SAFELY RAISE VECHICLE SUPPORT IT USING JACK STANDS.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE RIGHT HAND SPLASH SHIELD.THEN LOOSEN WATER PUMP PULLEY BOLTS LEAVE DRIVE BELT IN PLACE TO KEEP WATER PULLEY FROM TURNING WHILE LOOSEN PULLEY BOLTS.THEN YOU HAVE TO MOVE AC COMPRESSOR DONT DISCONNECT ANY REFRIGERANT LINES.JUST SET IT ASIDE THE ALTERNATOR AND ITS MOUNT ALSO HAS TO MOVED.THEN YOU ARE AT WATER PUMP.NOW THE 3.5L ENGINE WATER PUMP IS IN A TOUGH SPOT.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE ENGINE SPLASH SHIELD.REMOVE THE SUBFRAME BRACKET FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY. Replacement of Water Pump. 2001 Chevy Cavalier 2.4 L

Stick with me on this
1.Put the car on jack stands
2.Remove the exhuast manifold, Do not rotate the flex cuopling more then 4 degrees od damage will occur.
3.Diconnect the coolant inlet pipe from the water pump outlet hose, Disconnect from the engine, disconnect it from the thermostate housing and remove it.
4.lower the car back down of the jack stands.
5.Detach the brack booster hose.
6.Remove the timing chain cover and the tensioner.
7.Remove the heater outletpiper from the water pump.
8.Remove the water pump cover bolts.
9.Remove the water pump retianer nuts.
Remove the old gasket and clean.
10.On bench. Install the waterpump and cover but lreave the bolts finger tight.
11.Install back in car, leave water pump bolts looseto allow for positioning.
12.Install water pump cover to engine, tighten by hand.
13.Lubricate oringand install metal outlet pipe back into pump, hand tighten.
14a.Tighten the water pump to timing chain nuts
14b.Tighten the water pump cover to water pump housing bolts.
14c.Tighten water pump cover to engine block bolts.
14d.Tighten the radiator outlet pipe to water pump.
15.Install timing chain tensioner.
16.Install exhuast manifold.
17.Install exhuast pipe.
18. Fill it up and bleed the system.

How to change water pump nissan maxima 1995

Well, waterpump on your car is internal inside the timing chain area, being driven by the timing chain. You need to remove drive belts, the small black side covers, that are screwed into the front engine cover. The left on has the chain tensioner, the right one has the water pump behind it. Once the covers are removed, you need to push the timing chain tensioner inside and put a pin inside of it (tensioner ) to hold it in. Once you have done that, you need to rotate the engine counterclockwise (until you feel tension) to loosen the chain around the water pump. Then you will use 2 bolts (6mm and about 2 inches long) and screw those into the water pump body. This will pull the pump out of the engine, so pretty much the bolts are going to be acting as puller device to remove pump out of engine. reverse install procedure. This is not the easiest of repairs and not for a novice or someone, that doesn't really work on cars. Good luck.
