94 jeep grand cherokee stalls after the first 5 min of operation

My 94 Jeep Gr Cherokee (4.0L/6 cyl) has been stalling after it runs for about 5 min (from a cold engine). Sometimes it will start right back up only if I use the following proceedure (stop, place transmission into park, cycle key to off, wait a few seconds, cycle the key to start). Other times I have to wait 10-25 min and it will start right up as normal. Once this has happend & engine is warmed up, the problem doesn't usually return until engine has been off & cooled and then restarted. When the engine does start, the rpms stay up when I let off the accelerator for a few seconds (not sure what that's about). Also, the stall happends abruptly, whether at highway speeds or idle (stopped or slowing for a stop). I have found that if I keep the RPM's up above 1200rpm at all times it won't stall. The engine compartment was very dirty, thanks to a hole in my oil filter 1 yr ago. I degreased the engine compartment a couple of weeks ago and sprayed some light lubricant around the injector & fuel line connector o-rings and either one or both of these actions has seemend to diminish the frequency (it used to stall all the time & now just after initial start-up).

First I thought it was related to the fuel system (fuel pump-tested & is ok, poss bad o-rings on fuel line connectors or leaking o-rings on an injector, & I did replaced fuel rail mounted fuel pressure regulator. Now I'm not sure...Could it be an electrical issue??? The problem is related to the initial warm up & is very abrupt. since this issue started, I have also replaced the battery & spark plug wires (due to routine mx considerations) & problem persists still. I pulled the codes several times and have gotten the disconnected battery (I had disconnected the battery, but could also indicate short) and a lean mixture code (once).

I would greatly appreciate any help and ideas to solve this problem
Thanks - Mike

Also, I did change out the fuel filter when this problem startedand it had no effect.

Sounds like the automatic choke is either binding or gone bad.

On a cold start, that's why the RPMs are bumped up for a few minutes...the choke is allowing the engine to warm up, before dropping the intake mix to normal "run" level.

However, should the choke remain closed once the engine is hot, the stalling will happen for lack of air.

The choke-control is mounted on top of the manifold, near the throttle cable-cam.
Look for a small (about 3" wide X 2" deep) cone-shaped metal can with a linkage to the throttle cam.

With the engine off, spray the linkage at both ends with Liquid Wrtench and work the linkage in and out of the can a few times to check for smooth operation.
You should feel slight back-pressure when you move the linkage toward the controller.
With the linkage pushed in, spray and wipe the exposed surface inside the controller body.

Allow the cleaner to dry for a few minutes (it's just oil, I know...but if you used a spray, the propellants could be flammable) and start the truck.
Allow it ti idle at least 5 minutes until the auto-choke pulls back on the throttle...then take a short ride around the block to see if that cured the stalling.

    Almost forgot:
If after cleaning the choke control, it doesn't settle the engine back to a good idle when warm, replace the idle controller.

Forgot this because 9 times out of 10, a good cleaning will solve the sticking...and sticking is common in a dirty engine compartment.

I have a 94 jeep cherokee with a in- line 6. its stalling out and sometimes starts up before it even rolls to a stop or sometimes like now when im sitting here at work waiting for my wife cause it stalled...

After it stalls, have someone listen at the tank to see if the fuel pump is running when you turn the key on. If you can't hear it, it has failed (they overheat and bind, when cooled down they work 'till they again get hot). if the pump is running, likely the crank position sensor (11 o'clock on the bellhousing looking from rear) has failed....symptom is pretty much identical.

1996 jepp grand cherokee 6 cyl. kepps stalling out

Have a code test done (most larger parts houses will read codes for free)
Get yourself either a haynes or chilton manual and look up any codes and find what they are related to. Manuals will also list individual tests to components that you can do using a decent multi-meter.
Most common cause of a problem such as yours is either a failing crank position sensor or fuel pump but it can be caused by many other items including a loose connection at the ignition switch, coil etc. (why testing is important) Wish there was something simple like a "stalling out switch" you could replace, but there isn't!
Good luck and post back if you have a specific question about an individual part or system!

Engine trouble light coming on 2003 jeep gr. cherokee

If the light is ywllow, it's emmissions or some sensor. You can drive to a service center and have the codes read. If the light is red...STOP!! and check engine oil. DO NOT drive further!! Have it towed in for service.

Jeep stalls after 20 mins of runtime

Possible partially plugged filter, but also check ign coil...it could be "breaking down" when it gets hot!!!
Was distributor a guess, or was there a problem there? When it stalls, is there spark? Does it re-start and run normally after that?
