Truck sticks in park when trying to go into drive or any other gear. it wont move the shifter, on an automatic gmc sierra 1997

see if you can find another steering coloumn from a junk yard, it will be cheaper than replacing the broken piece(s)

First off, set the parking brake, raise vehicle so you can get under it. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission and manually move the shift lever to park. Then try moving the shift mechanism inside the car to park and then through each gear (engine off of course). See if the mechanism sticks, if so, probably a broken tab on the locking mechanism for the shift lever in the steering column. If it moves freely, try the lever on the transmission back and forth through the gear range to see if it sticks. If it sticks, or you can't initially move it by hand, you have a transmission problem that requires trained individuals to fix. If it moves freely also, try lubing the cable with silicone spray at all contact points, especially where it enters and exits any cable sheathing. (spray into sheathing well) If both move freely independent of each other, it may just have been in a bind, put both shifter and tranny lever in park and reattach the shift cable, Then try the gear range again from inside the vehicle.

I am assuming the shifter will not move out of Park (you don't mention it). The shift interlock is not working. Thing you can do is turn ignition key little, but just before ignition comes on, and try to move shifter to N. At this stage you can start the engine and shift to D. This is a temporary solution to allow you drive the vehicle to a repair facility. If you are successful, it is the interlock solenoid that needs to be checked out.

Problem could be the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
You may be able to turn the key switch past lock but not on, and then take the shifter out of park. The lock solenoid would need to be tested.

1997 GMC Subburban 1500 loses Tach Speedo and Trans sticks in High Gear. I changed the ignition Starter switch which I read was the problem but problem is intermittant and still exist? AMMCO told me to try changing the Neutral Saftey switch first, but didn't say why?

that would be your shift lever assembly and yes it can bwe fixed and its fairly easy

try to start it in neutral if this does not work try starting it while pulling the shifter slowly down through all gears

theres a safty switch when you hit the brake it releases and lets you shift this could be your problem

More then likely the cable from the shift lock solenoid that unlocks the shifter is binding up or the shift lock solenoid is sticking..
