EML light coming on intermittantly

I have just purchased a BMW 318i and have had it for 6 weeks.I ran my fuel down to just when the fuel light cam on and put 40 litres in of premium unleaded. Since that time I have had intermitant trouble with the EML light coming on and losing all power while driving. I stopped and parked and the car actually spluttered and nearly stalled.After turning off the car and restarting it the light went out.This was good for two days then after driving for approximately 10 to 15 minutes around town the light came on again and I lost power again.Again I turned the car off and it righted itself.
This happened again about 15 minutes later when I revved the engine two other lights flashed on it was the stability control light and another one when you stopped revving it they went off but EML light stayed on.Again when I turned if off it went out and I was able to drive again.The car does seem to be running a touch rough.
Any pointer would be great

It's not an old scool cars anymore.
No advise is possible untill you take it to workshop and let them scan it , I'm sure ECU stored all information and fault codes.

BMW 320i almost cutting out when slowing down
Re-Check your spark plugs again take each one out & make sure the gap is set at 24 on every plug, if this is not electric problem then look at the fuel your fuel pump cleaner may be blocked up both jobs are DIY as long as your technically minded. Cheers, Malcolm Campbell.

Fuel gauge will go up but only come back down to a quarter tank,although there is less than a quarter of a tank in there.any ideas?thanks jon (1996 bmw 318i)
Your intank fuel sending unit is failing and needs to be replaced. This can, and should, be purchased as a complete unit includuing the fuel pump and filter. You have to go into the tank anyway so why not replace both. Thank you, Dana

BMW 1999 318i eml light come on whilst driving. Car drives well but light still on. Any thoughts to why ?
The EML light will come on if you have an emissions fault , the car may drive ok but you may find you are using more fuel , it would be better to get the problem checked just to be on the safe side , regards mark.

Valvetronic internal fault and servomotor power limited
Hi I have a 2003 318i se saloon it started to loose power a few weeks ago now when you rev it up it makes a noise through the inlet manifold like its a dump valve it still drives but with very reduced power i had a new exhaust fitted yesterday with a new cat as i was told the cat had collapsed been told it could be the timing chain other than that i have not got any idea can any one help please.

328i BMW, and the EML light is on
Sometimes you can reset the engine warning light by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or more (be sure you have your stereo unlock code if needed).
That is not a good solution, it is better to diagnose and eventually fix the problem.
Have the car computer scanned with a code reader, the codes you get in return witll tell you exactly where to find the problem.

Here is the code list.

To get the codes the code reader must be connected to the car computer.


sometimes on Bmw you may need a Interface 16 pin Adapter, depending on the code reader.

Here is a good scaner.

Always better having the job done at a qualified garage.
