The factory security system (VATS/PassKey) is dying. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

I have a 1996 buick park ave 3.8 eng. it shifts normal if i do it manually but really slow if i put it in drive

obviously first check fluid level to be sure it is properly filled. Its an old vehicle and a slow leak could cause low fluid level. Thats what id check first.

If you cycle thru the gears.... 1st then 2nd then 3rd then drive, does it go into drive? If not, you could have a real problem.

1995 Buick Park Ave. Brake light remains ON and chimes on driving

The problem is the car think the park brake is on (intermittently). I would check the park brake switch, perhaps it's loose, or perhaps the park brake is pushed down to the first "click" spot. Also check the wiring connection to the switch, and the wiring nearby. Good luck!
