2001 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 70000 miles
The brake pads wore all the way down so the caliper pistons are fully extended. I obtained a caliper reset tool, but the piston is so far extended that the tool can not fit properly, making my only choice the fitting which fits directly on a 3/8 inch drive.
It was difficult turn, but once broken loose turns. After turning several minutes, it had done nothing but rotate--without going into the caliper at all.
Please advise of anything I can do to get the piston to depress, at least enough so I can use the reset tool.
If the master cylinder is full it will not be possible to make the slave cylinders to return.
Take off the master cylinder cap (try to remove some of the brake fluid, as pushing the slave cylinder in may make it overflow; also put a rag under the master to catch any drips).
If you can't get any special tool in to move the slave, try pushing a screwdriver between the plates and levering them apart.
Take care when maintaining the brake fluid level. Unless you have a leak, low fluid level usually means advance brake pad wear.
Try taking the cap off of the master cylinder. This will allow the fluid from the system to move back up the line and the piston to depress.
