The mark is on the crankshaft pulley (small cut) and timing cover, you may need to hilight it with some paint. The sticker on the hood tells you the degrees. Timing is not adjustable. If you are trying to replace the belt you can find further answers doing a google search.
You never have to take the outer pulley off unless you are doing a timing chain.
But I am a little confused because it appears some Subarus use a chain and some use a belt.
And ignition timing seems totally opaque unless you have the equipment to do it electronically:
the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong
not to bad a job, the manuals make it sound worse than it is, remove radiator ( better than damaging it ),all the pulleys have timing marks on them that align with marks on heads also the new belt will have marks on also ,which also lineup with marks on the pulleys, if needed this is a good time to replace the camshaft seals ,if the water pump needs replacing then yes its agood time to do it ..
it sounds like your crank timing is 180 degrees out you need to take the belt off and turn the crank 180 and realine timing marks then refit the belt hope that helps
all marks need to be aligned to 12 o'clock driver cam should align with notch in cover, crank sprocket also at 12 o'clock there is a straight line on reluctor of crank gear ,this line matches a notch on the oil pump where the crank sensor fits, right cam at 12 line should match camcase where it meets cylinder head
they should be marks on the cam gears take the #1 plug out take a long screwdriver put in cyld. hole have someone turn crank with wrench till it gets dead top and check the mark on crank then put belt back on start befor u put back to gether should start
