Put the car in neutral, can you get it to roll forward or backward with a couple of people pushing the car? I suspect the problem is your brakes froze up due to the one year sitting. Was the emergency brake on while the car was not being driven? If it was, it is stuck on, and probably will need to be disassembled (remove wheels and pull drums). You can try soaking the cable with some type of penetrating oil, and let it sit to work in, you may be able to get the cable working. If the e-brake was not on, it is the brake pads/shoes dragging that is the problem. Good luck.

First, check transmission fluid level, if low may not be able to pump, may need trans filter and fluid change.

My 1999 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.4L Automatic Gear Selector is broken

you car likely thinks its stuck in reverse, which it may be... even if you can roll it. you'll need to find a way to either get it into park or neutral, normally this can be done by the actual linkages under the shift console or from underneath the car.

Same as above. Shifter moves but stays in park!!

Likely the shift cable has broken or become disconnected. Move the shifter and watch the control arm on the transmission to see if it moves. If not, check/ replace the cable.

Car starts and runs fine. Wont shift out of park. Tried looking for vacuum line unsuccessfully. Shifter moves freely, but doesn't engage other gears or neutral.

CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FUSE AND THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID FUSE.IF THEY BOTH CHECK OUT OKAY.YOU HAVE A FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR FAULTY BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID.

1997 Pontiac Sunfire (automatic) transaxle

I do not know what you are looking at in the manual, but you probably heard a horrible noise when you put it into park, as the parking pawl tries to hold the car in place. Thist usually does not harm the transaxle. If the engine won't start then something else happened, perhaps the neutral safety switch was damaged or knocked out of adjustment. You might try to move the shifter back and forth and then back into park and then try to restart. If that doesn't work try to put the car in neutral to start. If you must have the car towed somewhere the repair should not be expensive, just have them reset the neutral safety switch.
