The car thinks your shifter is still in gear. turn the key back on and then shift it in and out of park a few times, making sure the little button for your thumb pops out all the way when you put it in park. that should release the key.
Good luck Doug from www.steeringcolumnservices.com
Check that as you move the shifter, that the shifting rods beneath are moving in tune with the shifter's position. If not, then your mechanism is faulty. It is almost certain that the issue lies with the external shifting mechanism. The issue may be just beneath the shifter lever, within the rubber or leather bag shroud. You might have to pull out the centre console to have a closer inspection.
It is probably not the shift linkage causing your concern. All modern vehicles have a feature called Shift Interlock. It doesn't allow the shifter on automatic equipped vehicles to be moved from park without the key in the ignition and the brake applied. There should be a bypass that will allow you to atleast drive the car for the time being. Check your owners manual to find where it is. It's usually around the shifter. The most common cause for this problem are the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid.
Likely the shift cable has broken or become disconnected. Move the shifter and watch the control arm on the transmission to see if it moves. If not, check/ replace the cable.
Your shift linkage has come undone. Jack the car up and climb underneath. You shift linkage is either com undone from the trans or you shift stabelize bad has come undone at the shift arm.
Check the switch under the brake pedal assembly. use a check light. black aligator clip tp ground. point of light to where the wire attachments are located at the switch. depress the brake and see if the light goes on when you press the brake. If it does not replace the switch.
