SOURCE: i want to change the leads on the spark plugs. i

The part that you unscrewed from the spark plug is what allows the plug cap to snap onto the plug. Screw the little adaptor back onto the spark plug - and the plug cap should then snap into place with a little pressure.

Car stalls only when raining

The engine system most affected by moisture is the high tension electrical system, so it is unlikely to be the starter or similar shorting out, but something like moisture getting into the distributor or coil. You might want to liberally spray any of the popular Water Dispersant (WDxx or similar) products on all your high tension components and leads. You can of course, spray the lower voltage components too, just for kicks. These Water Dispersant sprays are very inert so they are unlikely to cause harm, but will help keep moisture away and minimise the chance of shorts.

When it rains or is wet out the car starts but idles funny, it sputters and sounds like the engine is choking or stalling. The problem goes away when the car warms up.

try new plugs, leads and caps, it sounds like the ignition spark is tracking and causing a misfire, moisture helps this happen, but there must be a crack or problem with the insulation

Our 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol is now on its third new coil (and plugs renewed once) This seems to fix the misfiring issue for a while however eventually the problem reoccurs and tice the car has cut out...

I assume you have a coil pack like the US version.

Make sure the wiring connector is ok and the leads going into it are not loose or corrded inside the insulation. The seconday plug wires should have di-electric grease on them to prevent high voltage issues. Finally, the coils can actually take out the drivers in your engine computer.

Stalls, hard start in rain

Could be the ignition coil. But try a new distributor cap and rotor first; it will run you only about $20 to $25. I just went through this with my 1995 Jetta III GL. If the cap and rotor don't work, pull off the ignition coil and bring it to Auto Zone and they can test the coil with a multimeter for proper resistance, free of charge.

1997 vw jetta stalling when raining

The problem in the Jetta could very well be with the ignition coil. I had the same problem for a long time and tried the usual replacing plugs, wires, etc, but nothing seemed to work.

It ended up being the ignition coil which over time, managed to sustain very small cracks. Even a small amount of moisture would cause all sorts of problems.

I replaced the ignition coil and had no problems after that.
