Thats a tough one, the computer problems are huge on swapping the v8 in.. If it was me I would use an older motor that's not running a computer..or a crate motor ...

Look the cylinder heads over very closely. GM had an issue with certain heads and the extended service anti-freeze they used. These heads would crack.
You want to look for discoloration in and around combustion chamber.
They also had an issue with gaskets and the anti-freeze.

next step is to remove the intake, you are on the right track, worse i ever found was a cracke block, but that was in a 61 t-bird which was repaired with jb weld ten yrs ago and still holding, but the intake gasket sounds right

It could be a faulty fuel injector, try running a fuel injector cleaner through your fuel system. At worst the poppet nozzle has gone bad and will need to be replaced, you can buy the poppet nozzle it self individually at Auto Zone or buy upgrade MFI system which is much better and less pron to fuel leaking room a cracked poppet line or nozzle which will cause what you have described.

raeally sound s as if you fuel pump pickup is clogged. this is exactly what was wrong with a 1997 tahoe. no engine codes. slow acceleratoion fine all the way to freeway speeds 70mph. but if you go full throttle truck would buck and backfire through throttle body. it is a lot of work but you must drop the tank, inspect your lines into the tank, pull the pump replace the filer and if if filter is torn make sure pump is not also clogged. good luck

cyclinder head gasket blown needs head skimmed and new gasket fitted.adrian;;;

Hopefully the cylinder heads are good or repairable and the intake manifold can be mounted on the 94 short block for optimal results.Those heads are worth fixing and returning back to service.The next major hurdle would be the ECM and wiring harness as the 1996 is OBDII which creates huge differences in the old school 94 E/C.All the more reasons to continue using all the 96 items from the heads up .
