All engines are set on TDC
you did not mention the engine or if it is chain or belt so this is for chain.2.8L
crank key is in line with lh cam shaft center
LH key is vertical
RH key is facing down to the left in the 8o'clock position
for belt drive engines the crankshaft mark is 12 o'clock and both cam shafts are at12 o'clock on the head and two other marks facing2oclock on the lh cam and 10 o'clock on the rh cam
It is complicated to explain but it is in the workshop manual as to how to set it up correctly

SOURCE: timing belt broke on mazda 5

Think you have to put a flat bar across the back of the cam shafts same as the old ZETEC ford motors. Failing that are the vernier pullies marked with eithr O T or do they have a - or a . that line up with a position on the end of the cylinder head.

SOURCE: how do you replace timing chain in a1988 chevy s10

Line up the crank gear timing straight up, line up the cam gear timig mark straight down (so the marks are closest to each other, or facing each other). the distributor will be firing #4.

Is a mazda protege es 2000 1.6l pump gaz changed, spark plug is new , coil is ok, the mark for timing is ok (2cam)but not sure for crank mark i know is the pin on the crank supposely up ,the motor turn but...

If I understanding right, you set the timing on your mazda. you may have set timing on the exhaust stroke. Rotate the crankshaft again with the belts off and realign the timing marks. You need the number 1 cylinder top dead center on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. Also take off distributor cap and make sure rotor is pointing toward number 1 cylinder spark plug wire when at top dead center. Hope this is what you were asking.

Finding out how to find lost cam timing mark on a 1997 volvo 960

you are in a bit of a bind. Turning the engine over will result in bent valves so do not touch the crank shaft. you have to loose off all the rockers/ cam followers even to the point of removing the cam shaft. having done that remove no1 cylinder spark plug and by the use of a thin piece of wire turn the crank until the piston reaches top dead center. find this by rocking the crank back and forward until the piston dose'n move up or down check for the crank timing mark next replace the cam shaft and position the cam lobes for no1 piston in such a position that the inlet and exhaust valves move slightly up or down when the cam is moved slightly left or right. this is called valve over lap and with the piston on top dead center means that you now have valve timing for the engine. Cam timing marks can be dot on gear to shiny link on chain or if using a belt a dot on tooth lineing up with mould mark or join on head before starting up do a compression check to prove that there are no bent valves. if you are not mechanically minded enough to attempt the valve timing method it may be cheaper in the long term to let a qualified person do the job

How do i find TDC when set the timing marks on 1990 volvo 740gl

if you know the firing order of the engine and also the position of the no.1 cylinder you are off to a good start.
Remove the plug on the no.1 cylinder and turn the engine until the piston starts coming up on compression stroke, you can fing out if it is on compression stroke by placing your finger or thumb over the spark plug hole, you will feel the pressure under your thumb or finger as the piston starts to come up the bore.
when you can feel that pressure you can remove your thumb etc and stick a medium size screwdriver into the hole making sure you hold it from falling into the cylinder, rest the end of the driver on top of the piston and turn the engine slowly by hand only, (not by the starter) until the piston has come up to the top of the cylinder, now have a look at the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft, there should be markings on it and one marking will have a "0" with TDC above it, line that mark up with the pointer and that will be top dead center

I need the timing marks for the crankshaft. for a 1988 volvo 740. The timing belt broke while driving, need location of timing marks. thank you

don't panic about the marks too much, find top dead centre on cyl no 1,good chance once you have you will find something that does line up between the block/timing case and the pulley. don't forget once it is fitted to ALWAYS wind the engine by hand atleast 2 times to make sure the pistons don't hit valves before starting.

Fitting cam shafts on Volvo 850se 1994 20v 2ltr

There is a special tool that mechanics use for the alignment of the camshaft pullys. It is basically an angle iron straight edge that fit exactly into the camshft grooves.. Just make sure that the engine 's first cylinder is at the top. (Top dead center) before fitting the cam(s) into place.
