In a nut shell its a vacuum operated system under the dashboard that allows you to control cabin temperature .
There for any main engine vacuum problem lose of engine vacuum will effect how it works Not enough vacuum.
Also their are vacuum actuators small vacuum motors under the dash that open and close doors in the air duct system to direct air flow ware the knob is set .
It may be a simple problem but you need to think about it and look at things before you rip the dash out and have an out of control mess on your hands .
