3.0l V6 A/T. What are the possible problems associated with an automatic transmission not shifting correctly?

When the truck is placed in reverse the engine automatically increases rpm. The best way to get the truck to move in drive is to power shift from 1st or shut off the o/d. I have replaced fluid, trans. filter and had to replace the shifter tube on the column because the bolts had come loose from the transfer arm to the cable and broke an ear of the tube. Could the speed sensor, trans. solenoid, shift solenoid, or worn wiring harnesses cause this problem?

MILEAGE??? I would suspect a valve body issue in most cases. It is possible it may be solenoid related as well. If high mileage, there could be clutch issues or even pressure issues due to a defective pump. I would have the transmission module scanned for any codes that may help point you in the right direction

I have a 98 Tacoma 2wd automatic w/2.4 truck runs excellent, shifts perfect and does not slip any going forward, but if I park and have to back out it takes a second to engage reverse but it will engage

You do have a problem then. Slow reverse engagement can be the sign of a failing transmission. Use reverse as little as possible under as light a load as possible. If you have never changed the fluid and filter in the transmission do that as well, it may help. Also verify the fluid level is correct hot fluid check.

Has reverse no foward

If automatic most likely lingage between transmission and shift lever. possible bushings associated with and possibley the shift lever pivot bushing if it's "sloppy". Similar if, Standard but could be broken shift fork inside transmission.

My 93 dodge Dakota runs up to 4000 rpms before it shifts but it still idles really high after that. its a v6 3.9L automatic. I think its the shift linkage but I don't know how to adjust it. ive...

If it goes into gear correctly it's not the linkage. I.e drive reverse etc. I would suspect a pressure issue in the trans for the high shift rpm. Possibly low pump pressure or a valve body issue. The high idle could be a result of this or possibly a sticking cable if it has cruise. Possible vacuum issue also.

Trans does not want to respond in reverse & o/d light is flashing

With high mileage automatic transmissions, that have not been regularly replacing the transmission oil, it can cause major problems if you do change the oil. The sealing integrity in the valve block can be lost by flushing with new oil,
Firstly, just check and make sure the oil level is correct. Do this by running the engine, with your foot on the brake, go through all the shift positions 2-3 times, holding in those positions for a few seconds each time. Then put into park , still with the engine running, and check the oil level . if its a little low, add a small amount at a time till you get the correct level, each time going through the shift positions and then checking.

Reverse light problems

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced
