SOURCE: location of engine coolant temperature sensor

This sensor is a one wire which is normally around t'stat housing. You can start by grounding the wire(s) there one at a time to see if the dash light or gauge comes or move. If it does, that is the sensor wire and sensor should be close by.

On toyotas this is almost always a failed o2 period. Take it somewhere and have it put in. On v6's it is not that easy to get to.

Temp sensor on 1998 toyota tacoma 3400

The engine coolant temperature sensor is usually located on the thermostat housing. This sensor controls the readings of the coolant temperature gauge in your vehicle when the ignition switch is ON .Here's a link to the sensor. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Drain the coolant from the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the engine wiring protector from the brackets.
  3. Disconnect the sensor wire.
  4. Using a 19mm deep socket, remove the sensor and gasket.
To install:
  1. Apply a thin coat of Loctite or equivalent to the switch. By hand, carefully thread the switch into the engine. If resistance is felt at all, remove the switch and inspect the threads for any damage. Continue to install the switch. Once installed, tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2. Connect the sensor wiring.
  3. Install the engine wire protector to the brackets.
  4. Refill the coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks.

2004 Grand Cherokee 4.0L. Where is the temperature sensor located?

no symptoms posted, just and wide range easter egg hunt and no engine or transmission options stated "drive line" which.?

there are many temp sensors. on jeeps. and more each year it seems.
  1. EFI ENGine temperatures. ECT.
  2. transmission temperature (TCM input)
  3. outdoor air temp. (and option mine has... case in point)
  4. air temperature of the air inducted in to the engine (EFI IAT)
  5. HVAC , climate control temp sensors. at least 2.

post symptoms, then ask how to diagnose car.

The check enging light comes on then goes off. I foud out the code po118 engine coolant temp circut high input. is it the coolant temp sensor. if so how do I replace it. It is on a 2004 jetta tdi

Because ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor procedures vary depending upon their location, first locate the part. You may need to partially drain the engine coolant to prevent coolant spillage.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Unplug the ECT.
  • Then, unscrew it.
  • Reverse the removal procedures to install the new part.
  • Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.

The coolant temperature gauge sensor is a temperature-variable resistor, or thermistor. As coolant temperature increases, the resistance of the sensor decreases or decreases, depending on the type of sensor.
A1 and A2 platforms use a different type of circuit that A3 vehicles. On A1 and A2 vehicles, the circuit is a "resistance to ground" type. A3 vehicles use a "variable voltage" type, where a voltage is supplied to the sensor. Because of the circuitry design on A3 vehicles, testing of the coolant temperature gauge is limited.
The engine coolant temperature gauge uses a heat sensitive sending unit to transmit an electrical signal to the gauge. The sending unit is a heat sensitive variable resistor that is located on or near to the cylinder head and threads into an engine coolant passage. The sensors are a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) type. As the temperature increases, the electrical resistance of the sensor decreases. As the coolant temperature changes, so does the resistance of the sensor. The gauge is calibrated within the operating range of the sensor and interprets the resistance value to display the coolant temperature.
Beginning with model year 1994, the engine coolant gauge and the Engine Control Module (ECM) temperature sensors were combined into one sensor with 4 terminals. The basic operation remains the same in that their resistance decreases as the coolant temperature increases, however the actual resistance values of the 2 sensor circuits are different. The electrical connector of the 4-wire terminal sensor ( 1 and 2 ) is keyed to prevent improper connection of the sensor's electrical circuit.

I have a petrol 2.6 efi 1989 jackaroo and i can not find the temp sender,can some one help please

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor OPERATION The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the intake manifold and sends engine temperature information to the ECM. The ECM supplies 5 volts to the coolant temperature sensor circuit. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes. When the sensor is cold (internal resistance high), the ECM monitors a high signal voltage which it interprets as a cold engine. As the sensor warms (internal resistance low), the ECM monitors a low signal voltage which it interprets as warm engine.

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the water outlet on the back side of the head. If you vehicle still has a original VW part it will be black in color with a four terminal connector. This device signals the engine management system with the current coolant temperature, the ECU takes this information and uses it to control other such circuits as the idle speed, knock control system, oxygen sensor circuit, exhaust gas recalculation, and fuel tank venting. It is also important to note that if at any time ECU does not receive a signal from the ECT it will substitute a value of 176°F (80°C).

The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is mounted in the thermostat housing. The body of the sensor will be blue and the sensor will be blue and have two terminals if it is an original factory VW part.

WARNING When trouble shooting electrical components, always consult a wiring diagram for the particular year, make and model to ensure proper test equipment connection and diagnosis. Failure to use suitable test equipment and testing methods could permanently damage the electrical component(s).

ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (Figure 27) is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the PCM corresponding to temperature.
Thermistor-type sensors are considered passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so that varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow.
Voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor in a series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.
The ECT measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The sensor is threaded into an engine coolant passage. The ECT sensor is similar in construction to the IAT sensor.
