Your car does have rack and pinion steering. If all of the fluid leaked out somewhere and you continued to drive, you probably have 2 problems to repair:

1. What ever started leaking (return hose, rack, pressure hose, or could just be the pump itself)
2. Power steering pump was damaged from lack of lubrication (fluid)

It sounds like the steering rack and pinion unit needs replacing. It's not too difficult for the average mechanic, if you have a good repair manual and the proper tools. An afternoon's work should get it done. You can order a new rack and pinion from any parts store.

either the steering shaft has broke or the rack and pinion is broke have someone turn the wheel and look under hood near where the steering shaft meets the rack and pinion. do you see it spinning? if so the rack is most likely broke inside. if not the steering shaft may have snapped. hope this helps

Normally when you get tightening at the steering wheel that means that the rack and pinion is failing. A rack and pinion can cause tightening then before you realize it your steering is back to normal. I would have it checked. Good Luck

you will notice the rack and pinion if it is the trouble because when you steer the steering wheel the end play is very big because the specifide end of a steering wheel is only 25mm (+)or (-) 5mm.

then if the end play of the steering wheel go on the rack end pinion and look for other guy who can steer the steering wheel
so you can see the movement of the rack end pinion, one thing once the rack end pinion has a oil leakage i'm sure that the trouble was at that point but if no of what i have mentioned may be the trouble goes to the oil pump, but you can notice if the problem is on the steering pump it will create a noice ,hard to steer and you can see the oil will have a bubbles

The power steering pump could be bad,The rack and pinion could be bad.The belt could be off the pump.
