The shifting of the trans is eratic and shifts from low to second gear with a bang. could this be the egr valve?
No...but check to see if there is a vacuum modulator on the right side of the unit. If you have one, remove the hose, loosen the clamp and turn it so the line fitting points down, then tap on it. If fluid comes out, replace it. Also check that throttle cable going to linkage is adjusted properly.

its not a ford its a chevy there is no vacume line on a chevy of this year its electric shift modulator sensor on the driver side of tranny or check your lock out sensor on the tranny some times if you unpug it it will shift ok try this out first
Listen to me not him ok , hes talking about freakin fords not chevy's now your chevy is a 91 its got electrical sensors and electric shift modulator and a electric shift lockout sensor ok try unpluging the lockout shift sensor on the driver side of the tranny its located near the front of the bell housing ok then try that if not that plug it back in then replace your electronic shift modulator ok if thats not your problem then check your U Joints all 4 or 6 of them ok make sure theres no slapping in your U Joints on all your shafts if no problems there then you have a tranny pump problem thats it have a nice day !
i meant near the front driver side of the tranny in front of your shifing rod cable linkage cable connected on the driver side of tranny ok or if all else has a problem still banging after all these problems checked then go and check your gears in the rear
