I have a GMC Topkick lopro c6000 with a big block 366 and whenever im going up a hill or under heavy acceleration it intermittently pops and loses power. I thought it was the coil but i replaced it and it didnt fix the problem. I recently tuned it up and i had to put new exhaust gaskets on due to a leak. please help!!!!

Yes that's very possible also make sure you put stock spark plugs in it and not cheap autolites cause I've had nothing but problems out of them. By stock I mean ac seldom for gm champion for dodge motorcraft for ford and bck for foreign vehicles

Hello
When you say you tuned it up what did you replace? this type of symtom can be due to defective spark plug wires and or a defective distributor rotor and distributor cap, under a load like going up a hill is when these parts break down and you get a weak spark, also the wires can cross fire due to electrical leakage, if you have not replaced the plug wires and the distributor rotor and cap do so, I believe it will cure the problem.

Sounds like the timing chain has become stretched. the timing will vary a fair amount when that happens. inspect the timing changing to see that it is not loose. two other possibilties are a bad spark plug wire or the wires were not put in the proper firing order.

Hi. Changing the coil first was a good move. Since it did not solve this illusive problem now change the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and I believe your problem will be solved. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!!

Yes it ended up being the distributor cap and rotor button. They were corroded on the connections and caused it to skip

  • Vincent Simone Oct 10, 2011

Wow, and they were only 3 weeks old. I have the exact same issue, Idles fine, put it in gear, she spits and spudders. I put a new cap and rotor on a couple of months ago, but didn't take her for a drive, so maybe it's wet in the cap?

Did you ever know what the timing is suppose to be set for?

  • justin richey Oct 10, 2011

Its supposed to be at zero degrees top dead center but you will need a timing light to check this

Im having a problem with a deisel gmc topkick getting air in the glass bulb

I am not sure what a topkick is?

By glass bulb I assume you mean the diesel prefilter or sedimenter?

Usually air in the glass bulb means there is either an air leak in that assembly or in the fuel line leading to it or it could signal a restriction or blockage.

My ignition relay fuse on my 1993 gmc topkick lopro 6000 keeps blowing after driving please help me

Have any of the mechanics had access to or knowledge of the wiring diagram of the ignition circuit for this truck? Have they tried the wiggle testing to look for a short in the wiring harness? You said it keeps blowing after driving. Does it seem to blow the fuse as you are shutting it off? I would check the ignition switch in that case. Other than that, I would say further testing of the ignition circuit with a volt ohm meter is required.
