STARTER SPINNING BUT NOT TURNING OVER THE MOTOR

I drove one in 1974 my friend, I had TR4, Triumph then.(just back from NAM)
ours with both stick shift never seen an automatic then.
who made that Hydramatic then?

cranking the crank shaft seen is spinning? fast.?
check compression?
seems to me it blew up the starters over-running clutch rendering the starter useless, really look at the crankshaft pulley first;
if crank is dead, and starter motor SINGS high, the clutch on the starter pinion shaft was wrecked,

Is the security light flashing on the dash?

Is the battery flat, any noises, clicks? Headlights work and bright?

Has anyone checked for Diagnostic Trouble codes?

Won't start how ? When turning the key to start does the starter spin the engine ? Crank - no - start or nothing happens , no - crank - no - start .

not enough voltage in the battery to turn the engine over.

i cant dope out that symptoms.

does it crank or not. be clear there.

no car starts (but my 6sp) if it dont crank.

on A/T cars cranking is a first thing. so does it.?

Solenoids do not spin, the stroke only , it a linear motion.

the Sol. moves the pinion and the main contactor switch only.



my guess is the Starter spins and the crank don\'t spin,

you hear the starter motor spin up, it sings. like bird.

that means the starter /solenoid are bad. (crude)

if the battery is good and or jumper starting off a running car.



It can just be a dirty starter pinion, clean it , repeat.

fixed many for this. i have.



battery cable lugs clean, and good. no green rust.

bad cable usually just make a loud THUNK sound. no spin.

Ok , what type of toyota and type of engine, year too would help.
When you say it spins over is the starter motor making noise but the motor does not turn? Cranking and spin over are the same terms of words. Cheers

Won't start how ? A crank - no start condition or a no crank - no start ? When you the the key an nothing happens , the starter doesn't engage an spin the engine - no crank - no start . When you turn the key an the starter engages an spins the engine but does not start an run - crank - no start . Now what is your doing ?

The high pitched spinning sound you hear is the starter bendex trying to engage the flywheel. The starter may check out ok, but the bendex is turning but coming out. The starter will need replaced.

If you can hear it spin(starter), but not actually hear the motor turning over or trying to crank/start..... Sounds like starter not engaging-Replace starter. Small possibility flywheel is damaged, but less likely.
