Coolant is leaking from the freeze plug on my 97 chevy lumina it has a 3.1 litre V6 and i would like to know the location of the frost plug on the back of the engine
It's possible, but probably not the freeze plug that's leaking. Look very carefully at the back of the engine, underneath the throttle body, at the top of the block adjacent to the seam of the intake manifold and I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the intake manifold gasket is leaking and running down below. Google "3.1 intake gasket" Make sure you're sitting down.

They are located around the perimeter of the engine block and the cylinder head. They are visible in some locations, but not all. The look like a silver circular disc recessed into the head or block. There are some that will probably be inaccessible inside the transmission bell housing area. If you are going to replace all of them (as you should if they are starting to fail), it is easiest to do with the engine out of the vehicle, since the old ones need removal and the openings need to be cleaned of rust and corrosion before installing the new ones. They fail over time, but poor coolant quality/concentration accelerates the problem.
Which ones? There are several. There are 2 or 3 freeze plugs on each side of the engine block. There are 2 freeze plugs on the back of the block between the engine and the transmission and there is one in each cylinder head. Freeze plugs can be very difficult to change properly with the engine still in the car unless you vave the correct tools and equipment to get the job done. They can be very tricky getting them in correctly when you DO have the proper tools.
More than likely a freeze plug.Get the vehicle running and when the cooling fans come on(with ac and defrost off) turn motor off and look for leak under vehicle, this will help you locate the leak a lot better.
try using a mirror to see in the rear of the motor because ther are freez or welch plugs at th rear of the head & engine block!
it may also be leaking behind the flywheel & can only be seen coming from where the transmission or gearbox bolts to th motor!
Cheers Rob
Sounds like you have a freeze plug that has rusted out. And it is located in side the bell housing behind the flywheel. You will need to remove the transmission and the flywheel to gain access to the freeze plugs. There are two of them at the rear of the engine above the center line of the crankshaft. One to the left and one to the right.
