Low rpm's in idle when heating/cooling system is on & surges.

My 1995 Ford Explorer runs ok until I turn on my heating/cooling system. Then Rpm's drop from 600 to 100. When I put the truck into gear the RPM's come up to about 300 and the vehicle surges then RPM's drop and it's safe for me to move forward. This vehicle starts and revs nicely when cold but warm starts present the above problem. I've had my heater blower motor replaced since the system cut out totally but that hasn't solved the surging and low rpm problem. I have to keep the heat and a/c off.
Any idea s anyone?
Thank-you,
L.Hamilton

Can you tell me why my heating/cooling system seems to be involved?

Check your EGR or your Idle control Valve. This can cause a problem with your irratic idling

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2009

When you put your AC or heater on it puts a strain on your motor and will make your motor run about 35 to 50 more RPM. The heater especially draws air from the heat of your engine and if your EGR is saying your engine is not hot enough it will cause these problems. I know it seems wierd but it is true.

3000 is plenty of RPM in most cases,Darlene. Have you had the codes read? don-ohio (:^)

I have a 1995 suzuki sidekick that is revving hi then low while in nuetral also when driving now it revvs up very high while sitting at a stoplight

at what RPM?,sure the 2wd has no tachometer,

Sidekick, with what engine? sure 5speed and 2wd,
but what engine.?
in 1995 they (last year this) 2 engines
the 8v and 16valve,
both, night and day different, EFI.
TBI and MPI injected, 8v is black top, 16v says 16 valves on top.
but both engines, will fail ISC controls like that if there are problems.(idle speed controls)
the surging (hunting) is one of 2 things.
  1. (too lean, or air leaks)
  2. or ISC lost control)
the ECU on the car will in fact hunt the ISC if it can not attain
800 RPM hot IDLE, that is its JOB, to do that, endlessly.
in fact 200 times a second.!
but is not working. (this control, its out of control for sure)
to find this can be easy or hard.? (luck and true causes)
depends on true cause.
I cant do both engines here, be like 10 pages.
The 8v engine races with all air leaks. and hunts. (races)
the 16v goes lean with all air leaks, (air density system is unique)
and goes slower, RPM and may hunt. no RPM stated so cant wax smarter...sorry.

so its a dirty ISC? cant close fully, ? clean it? first.
the 8v has air leaks. caused by vast reasons.
cracked hoses. leaking diaphragms, even the brake booster can leak. lots of leakage patch possible
or some one fiddled the idle air bleed screw making it fail.
try closing that valve (screw) turn it CW directly clock wise.

this page covers both systems.

http://www.fixkick.com/fresh-air/idle-air-supply.html

this ISC cleans just like the EGR that leaks.
egr leaking cause, low RPm and it too, can make the ISC go nuts.
so, but no RPM stated. so.....
eg: hunting from 1000 to 1500RPM
or hunting from 500 to 700 rpm?

i pinch all hoses first.
if RPM drops the hose is cracked or the other end is leaking air.
every 50k miles?

http://www.fixkick.com/sensors/cleaning-egr-isc/double-trouble1w.JPG

does RPM go below 800 RPM HOT engine?
yes ./no
this a is key factor.

Ford escort 2l engine surges, changes rpm at idle.

sounds like it could be the idle speed control valve

Idle speed valve

cold or hot. there are 2, on all suz engines (what transmission, 3sp,4sp or 5sp)
post symptoms, sure bad idle but hot , cold or both
hot means engine is at 180F or more holding......
is hot idle above 800 RPM or Below?
is the idle surging out of control hot?
Does hot idle (spec 800) drop in RPM with cab heat fan on and Headlights turn on at the seam time.? (yes, bad iSC funcition)
if ildle is low, say so, that is cause by other bad parts. (or set wrong)

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially

cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2012 ford explorer that only blows hot air while moving, but idling blows warm air.

Yeah, I'm from Minnesota, so know what you mean. You need to check the flow of air. A couple things. Is it any better if you have the re-circulator on? Also, does the temperature gauge vary any between idle and driving?

Try idle in neutral with the engine running at driving RPM - does that make a change?

I suspect a flow restriction at low RPM.

Get back to me.
