Flashing check engine light

My 2001 es protege felt as thou it would not run and would hardly go with the gas pedal fully depressed. Limped it off the road and after a few mimutes it ran ok. with check engine light is on. the dealre replaced the fuel pump becaues the sock or screen was getting clogged. the next day the light went and the dealer said it is code PO421and that the front cat converter needs replaced. I did not replace it. Four days later while driving on the turnpike at 65mpr the car felt as thou it hesiatied and the check enginr light began flashing. What should I do?

I had the same random engine misfire problem. After trying several things, we finally replaced the coils, and the misfires have stopped.

Unfortunately, the idle had been rough for a while, and it is now a lot worse, but that's not related to the previous problem.

I have the same problem and it has been on going for over a year. I have had my vehicle to three mecahnics including an electrical specialist and a Mazda dealer. I have replaced cat, coils, plugs, erg valve and a multitude of diagnostics have been done through a process of elemintaion. My electrical guy thinks it is the computer. As you may know they are quite expensive and finding a used one is a challenge. If anyone ever finds out what this causing these cars to act so crazy please let me know.

Code p 0421 refers to warm up cat converter , bank 1 --efficiency below threshold ====causes --cat converter---wiring---HO2S ( heated oxygen sensor ( ==the unit in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter)
as cat converts fail and can block the exhaust system I would advise finding an accredited exhaust shop and having it replaced
after that if the light comes back replace the HO2S sensor

I had the same problem with my 02 Protege 5. After new plugs, wires and a few hours of tinkering around, we found it to be a grounding problem with 1 of the coil packs. There are 2 coil packs on the motor. You can pick one up at Autozone for $30 and they very simple to change out! Good luck!

SOURCE: Check engine light intermittently flashing, car jerking.

If you have one of the chain auto parts stores near you, check with them by phone first but most of them offer a free scan of your computer which probably has diagnostic codes stored related to your problem.

SOURCE: HI my 94 mazda protege was running fine untill 2

Well, the first thing woulb be that its misfiring, may want to start with a complete tune-up with wires and also replace the fuel filter, it sounds like its misfiring under a load which is usualy related to bad wire or wires, so i would start there and see how it runs after that, because it runs okay when the gas is pushed slowly makes me belive its a misfire problem, also clean the throtle body good use a old toth brush and some carb cleaner, hope this helps you out, good luck.

Testimonial: "thak you JohnJhon2,turned out to be wire booth over spark plug of cylinder #1 that had become conductive on the inside.replaced entire wire & fixed it"

SOURCE: For 2003 Mazda Protege ES model 2.0L 4cyl engine;

Check the air inlet boot going from the air filter to the intake for rips or holes. If rips exist, this would allow air to bypass the filter and mass air flow sensor and will lead to a check engine light appearing. The code would read "too lean, bank 1." If this problem is allowed to continue for long periods of time, the EGR ports will have to be cleaned out and maybe even the intake.

The change oil light came on. on my friends 2002 monte carlo ss so i gave it an oil change and a new filter . the light won't go off.

The "Oil Change Reminder Light" has to be reset.

To reset the oil change reminder light with the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do not start engine. After turning the ignition ON, depress the accelerator pedal fully to the floor and let it up again 3 times within 5 seconds. The oil change reminder light should flash a few times to let you know that it is resetting. If it does not flash, turn the switch OFF and repeat the procedure. After it flashes, turn the ignition switch OFF. Then start the engine. The light should come on for a bulb check then go out and stay out.

Reset check engine light

First of all, you should'nt do this unless you know what the problem is.. or what tripped it. I had this problem when my husband and I were replacing a head unit and disconnected the old head unit, a/c and other stuff then turn the car on. This made the light flash. The first time we took it in and got charged $50 to reset it. The second time we did this procedure and it worked.

ECU Resetting Procedures

Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON.
A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.

Reset Check Engine Light Procedures

1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 seconds.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.
