I had wired the tps backward and it idled at 3k just because it thought i was at full throttle. a short in the wires might be causing something similar. also incorrect voltage from other sensors like coolant temp can cause it to idle high.

What about if u check the signal going to the ECM with the full throttle it should be 5 volts, a good TPS should be between 4.5 & 5 VDC but u will have to check the wire end that gets into the ECM.

Replaced a spark plug wire that was arcing to fix an unrelated problem and the car drove fine until you put it under heavy acceleration. It would backfire and lose all power until u let off the gas. A...

Check the oil, the low oil sensor will disable the ignition if more than a quart low. Next change the air filter, a dirty air filter can put the MAF ( mass airflow) sensor out range. Next change the fuel filter. A cough or back fire is an indication of fuel starvation. Always do the cheapest fixes first. Perform an OBDII scan for stored fault history before buying parts you don't need.

TPS ISSUES!

It seems that you probably have a major vacuum leak, causing a very hi idle and rough shifting . The fist thing is get a can of intake cleaner and with the engine runing ,spray around the base of the throttle body and observe any changes in idle speed. The gasket under the TBI has a habit of leaking. When there is an uncontrolled vacuum leak the engine just thinks you have opened the throttle. Good luck Moe

Car dies out when I accelerate. Idles ok. Its getting gas but when I take off it stalls

There are 3 likely causes for your problem. It could be any 1 or a combination of the 3.
  1. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  2. Clogged or bad fuel injector
  3. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) This controls idle speed when the engine is cold, warm, or with the AC on.
Most often it's #3. Most large auto parts stores will perform a complimentary diagnostic test on your car. This will give you error codes stored in the car's computer and allow you to hone in on the problem.

Tps sensor

There are 2 screws that hold the TPS on to the side of the throttle body. Before you take the old TPS off, note where the TPS is located regarding the adjustment slots. Remove the 2 screws, and remove the old TPS, install the new one, and try to achieve the SAME adjustment. If you get the adjustment wrong, the engine will idle up & down. If it does, move the new TPS slightly until the idle smooths out.
