Purchased a '94 jag. owner said "lucas electrical system needs a little TLC work to run properly".......riiiiight. Is the only way to do this through/with a jag mechanic? Can a person with a fair amount of mechanical training do this himself?

sounds like a lot for labour charge,but yes its a big job to remove the headlight unit ,its about a 20min job to remove then time in finding fault and then refitting it.Also on the garages side you are paying for all the time in college as well.as one solicitor said to me once you dont pay for what i do but for what i know ????.But look on the bright side its a JAG which means no smoking in it ,polish it every sunday and every second week rub the leather seats in with cream.also find a partner who is a mechanic to look after it for you

Yes its a new one to me too !
I presume its an automatic model ?
Possibly the gear selection inhibitor switch is at fault, due to water ingress ?
Have you tried starting in neutral ?
Do you hear any clicking from the engine starter at all, when you turn the key ?
If you do, then suspect the starter motor at fault.
I see you posted this on Dec the 6th, so expect you have located the problem by now, if not hope I have been of some help.

At that price replace the engine. Make sure though that you get a warranty for the engine that includes the cost of installation if the new one fails. Most shops will warranty for 90 days which is long enough to find out if there is going to be a problem.
