SOURCE: 2003 Saab 9-5 Check Engine Light

Take the car to Autozone, they will read the codes via OBD II for free.  Other parts stores may have the same policy ... call first.   My VW dealer charges $40 to pull the codes!!   I bought a low-end OBD II reader for $50, as the wife and I  both have VWs.

White smoke is usually antifreeze, the most frequent cause of this is head gasket blown or cracked head ... big bucks.  Hopefully this is not you.  Unless the car had a dramatic overheating incident, for most makes of cars, this should not happen until you have over 100K miles, probably closer to 200K.
White smoke could also be break fluid sucked in from power brake booster.  If it's brake fluid, it will smell very bad.
On cold days, when the car first starts, white smoke can just be normal condensation in the tailpipe ... if it happens after the car is warmed up ... it's something else.
Check your coolant overflow tank level ... if it's very low or empty ... put water in (don't bother with antifreeze yet in case you are burning it up in the engine).
Good luck, ..ajm

SOURCE: Instrument panel's lights out parttially....

The driver speaker cover comes off with Torx and after shining light through windshield, you will see two bulbs on a printed circuit film set apart from each other. You can reach them and twist and pull, clean contacts if bulbs not blown, replacement Sylvania 2721. There is also the reostat/dimmer knob that can be jiggled on dash, lower than the bulbs, each controling each bulb. I am in process of replacing mine with LED lights, which are brighter and come in colors as well. You just have to make sure the LED draws no more than 12 VDC as the alternator output is 14 VDC. Check out superbrightleds.com , there you will look for # 74 bulbs, which is same as 2721...I just came across the site today and thought, although your ????was a while ago, maybe this will give Saab Nation the ability to see at night....LOL

SOURCE: I have a Saab 9-3 TDi 2001. The engine warning

Hi
If your engine warning light has come on this is indicating there in a serious problem and the limp mode has been switched on to safe guard the engine. It could be a number things, but I'll give you some basic things to look at which may help you.

  1. Check all fluids are are the correct levels - engine oil, radiator water level in overflow tank usual beside the radiator.
  2. Also check transmission fluid level if it is an automatic, from the dipstick.
If all these are ok then check these areas:
  1. Air Filter and housing has no blockage.
  2. Fuel filter may need replacing or water separator is filled with water, loosen valve at the bottom of fuel filter and drain the excess water. Fuel should not come out just water if there is any.
If all these are ok then there is a problem regarding sensor faults, fuel pump timing, and further in depth diagnosis will be needed. Hope this is helpful, let me know how you get on.

SOURCE: speedometer not working and check engine light is

ONLY APPLIES TO CONDITION OCCURING AFTER WORKING ON BRAKES
My son's 1998 9-5 had similar issues after we had rebuilt the callipers and had a general refurbishment of the front hub. No amount of bleeding the brakes or checking components resolved the problem. We were resigned to taking it in for a diagnostic report but found that after driving a short distance the warning lights disappeared despite having previously run the car in drive with the front wheels raised which was when we noticed the lack of speedo.
My guess, and had been a bit of hope, is that the system needed to recalibrate after all the work we had done. Perhaps it hadn't liked the front wheels turning whilst the back remained stationary - whatever.
