This procedure usually works:

  • Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.
  • Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
  • Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
  • Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

Two things,
1. battery needs load test.
2. starter solenoid on the right fender well.

SOURCE: 2000 windstar check engine light come on moter

If you live in the US, take it into an Auto zone store and they will read off the stored codes for you. Once you have the codes you can decide on a course of action.
Other major auto parts outlets may offer the same service, as they all want your parts business. Give them a call.

Hope this is of some help.

Get your ECM replaced. Usually it's next to battery or inside front fenders. The rain must have shorted out connections and fried ECM. Engine will sputter until it is done. Usually autozone, advance auto, or dealer has ECM.

Is there a reset switch for a fuel pump on a 2001 ford windstar?

check for fuel pump fuse.
https://www.google.com/search?q=2001+ford+windstar+fuses&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=cNo&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=cFs_UeWYA6iF2AW1xoFA&ved=0CD4QsAQ&biw=1166&bih=600
check the connections at the top of fuel tank. If the pump starts clean the connections and put back on.
There is a relay that controls the pump. check connection to relay.
in wire harness there are 2 large contacts that can be jumped
to force the fuel pump to operate. be careful to only jump the big ones.

Still trouble with my 2001 Ford Windstar after replacing spark plugs and wires. It always starts instantly though still running a little rough. Sometimes the power doesn't kick right in to climb

I would suggest you run a compression check on this engine and also have the coolant recovery tank tested for the presence of combustion gases with a gas analyzer, any gases would indicate a leaking head gasket. Any engine cylinder that is lower than 5% of the highest reading cylinder in pounds per square inch has a problem like a scored cylinder or leaking intake or exhaust valve seat.

Van died, when trying to start, it acted like it was not getting fuel;turning over but couldnt keep running. However when just turning key on, you can hear fuel pump kick on.

I would start by changing the fuel filter, if it hasn't been done within the past 6 months. If you know someone who can test your fuel pressure and cylinder compression, have them do so. If all checks out, make sure your spark plug wires, coil, and spark plugs are in good condition. If you have misfiring problems replace your spark plug wires and have your timing checked out.

Engine light on my 1999 windstar is blinking

the windstars are very bad for cracked ignition coils, to check you have to remove the coil, remove spark plug wires from coil, disconnect main harness from coil and remove the 3 7mm bolts that hold it in place, once it is out inspect it for cracks, if it is the coil expect to pay around $105 for a new one from your Ford dealer
