Had heater core replaced now wont change from defrost vents and air condictioner compressor wont run
SOURCE: my heater is blowing cold air, and it wont blow
OK, a vacuum controlled blend door is the problem. Fig. Fig. 1: Plenum door vacuum motors
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
See Figure 1

Search for other vacuum motors under the dash to see if the vacuum hoses have somehow deteriorated or become detached.

Try to look up your vehicle on autozone.com for other vacuum motors under the 'heater' section of the 'chassis electrical' section of the 'repair guide' after selecting your 1996 Ford f250 crew cab vehicle.

SOURCE: Vent control
You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.
SOURCE: PROBLEM WHEN SELECTING THE DIRECTION FOR THE AIR
Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.
SOURCE: 1999 f350 ac blows from defrost vents instead of ac vents
check for a vacuum line that has fallen off the diaphram vacuum "switch can" near the vent shift lever at the heater box under the dash passenger side
SOURCE: why is all the air blowing through the defrost vent only
Either the door that controls the flap that either sends the air through the defrost or the regular outlet is stuck or not working. Some of them work off of a cable and others work from vacuum. Not sure which the ford escort uses but usually you are able to hear the flap move when you go from defrost to regular cabin vent. Or possibly the air duct hose has come off that sends the air through the cabin. Good Luck and hope this helped a little.
