Usually a blend door problem.
The system is designed to default to the defrost position for safety.
If the blend doors are vac operated, look for a vac leak.
If electric, look for a failed motor or stuck door.

Vents won't blow hot or cold air. Comes from defrost and feet when you put fan on.

It's the vent actuator, it moves the baffle that changes the direction of the air flow.
Here is a video of a broken vacuum hose that creates the same problem.

It could also be a failed actuator.

Why does Air flow to windshield defrost vents only?

Most often the problem is in corroded negatives.
Go into the engine compartment and , one at a time with the power off, unscrew a ground wire on the wheel well or the firewall and clean the corrosion off it. Replace each one and tighten carefully. Repeat for every ground you can find. While you are at it, disconnect the battery wires and clean them too. When done, start the engine again (sorry, you might have lost all your radio settings!) and try the switch again. Even the engine may run better.

2002 Jimmy SLS 4x4 Heater controls don't seem to be working. I can't get the air flow directed to the proper outlets.eg. can't get full flow to defrost or foot outlet. Flow seems to want out at dash vents....

There are doors in the plenum that open and close to redirect flow. There are vacuum and electric motors that control them or could be your switch.
