This started last Friday, a "whine" when RPM goes up/down. Sound comes from area of alternator or water pump. Also, coolent has been leaking (somewhere) and have to add at least once a week, or so. Has 110,000 miles, no record from previous owner as to repairs. Replacing serpentine belt tomorrow morning, may find more info as to leak.
Never use radiator stop leak. It clogs everything up. It makes everything worse. Just get the problem fixed instead of using stop leak!
Whining because of low power steering fluid? I know you didn't say you added fluid to power steering, but that generally the cause,UNLESS alternator bearings are going out.
When my cars enter older age(100,000 plus miles),I do something to lessen the probablility of a hose or water pump or gasket blowout/leak.
It takes DILIGENCE,though, and some people aren't diligent enough asnd shouldn't try it.
I use a 60/40 or up to 65/35 ratio of antifreeze to water as my coolant strength.
THEN I keep the expansion tank CAP(if it's a pressurized type tank) barely loose,so PRESSURE cannot build up in the system.THIS keeps the catastrophic failures which can happen suddenly at ant time, anywhere, from happening, generally.
I have done this for years with no ill effects, simply because I NEVER let my antifreeze ratio drop below 60/40.
Along with this,to stop or control your leak, you can add a can of RADIATOR stop-leak (prestone or Barr's leaks' is good),but ONLY the type which says it will work without draining the antifreeze out.
For the period of time that the Stop-Leak is working(that day or 2days)you need to have the expansion cap tight for pressure to seal that leak. Then if you are a person who can watch the antifreeze always stays at 60/40, do the above for a long life of your cooling system. don-ohio (:^)
