I have a 99 ram1500 4x4, the fuel gauge quit working so i replaced the fuel pump. It did not fix the problem it still reads empty. Did lots of looking and asking around and got lots of different answers from sending unit on new pump bad to computer gone bad. However one thing that it is doing that is new is when i went to clear the check engine light on the truck the fuel needle sprung to full, but after i restart the truck the engine light comes back on immediately and the needle drops back to empty. (and the code is p0505) air idle control valve, but i have replaced that about 3 times in a year. HELP!!!

there is two things : fuel gauge and dash fuel gauge. The fuel gauge in tank rated to 0 to 90ohms.disconnect wire at the tank take a variable resistor connect it to wire .read the dash gauge if it move as you move the resistor. if ok fuel tank gauge is at fault
sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.
It is likely the fuel level sending unit. I had a customer with an 03 Monte Carlo that the pump went out and the fuel gauge hadn't worked in about a year. We replaced the fuel pump module and it took care of both problems. I believe the sending unit is available separately from the complete module.
well # 1 the full gauge when empty is a sign that your fuel pump is bad and that needs to be replaced the part about spitting the gas back out is probrobly a clog between the fuel door and the tank itself or their might be a vapor lock door that might be stuck shut so fuel cant get in im not 100%sure about that but im 100%sure that the fuel guage is the fuel pump being dead.
