Sounds a lot like your display driver is not installed properly. What is the make of the video card? It should display that information above the slider.

If it's blank or unknown on plug and play monitor (or whatever monitor you have), then the video driver is not installed properly. That's a whole other question which will require more information.

Maximum resolution for my Samsung 740NW is now 800 X 600. Can this be increased to at least 1240 X 600? My system is Windows XP professional.

Your monitor can reportedly display a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720. The resolution your graphics card is outputting can be changed in your graphics card's resolution settings.

Check your video connection, however I am positive that your lcd panel is broken. You can get cheap replacement lcd panels on Ebay or you can search Google shopping for them as well.

I want to run a software which requires a screen resolution of 1280 x 768 but my Samsung SyncMaster 740nw supports up to 1280 x 700 screen resolution. Is there anything that I can do? Please guide.

Have you tried adjusting the screen resolution in Control Panel - Display - Settings and moving the slider on Screen resolution?
Normally a monitor such as Samsung LCD would be able to display a higher resolution.
If you cannot adjust the Screen resolution in Display - Settings then it may be that the correct video driver was not installed or is corrupted.
To check if the video diver is OK, go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device manager and click on Display adapter. Check that your display adapter is OK and working. If you see a yellow ? against the video adapter or a standard VGA adapter was installed then you need to re-install the video driver for your model graphics card.

Samsung syncmaster 913v gives message ' not optimum mode"

The 913V has a native resolution of 1280x1024. If you use a higher resolution than that, you'll get slightly blurry text. If you use a lower resolution, then images will be slightly choppy around the edges.

To get rid of the message, set your resolution to 1280x1024.

In Windows XP, you do this by right-clicking on the background (desktop) and selecting "Properties" to bring up the display properties.
Select the tab marked "Settings" and look for a "Screen Resolution" slider. Move that slider to the right until it displays "1280x1024" and hit "OK"

My syncmaster 710n is not working. I get the box where it ses what resolution si the right one, but the syncmaster 710v works normaly. Does that means my 710n can`t be repared anymore? Thanks

Not completely sure what you're saying. Here's what I got out of your problem:

You have a Syncmaster 710n that displays a box saying the best resolution is _____ x _____, but your Syncmaster 710v doesn't show that message.

The main question I have to ask you is whether or not you see the screen or display behind the message on the Syncmaster 710n.

In either case, I doubt that this is a hardware problem. I also highly doubt that your monitor cannot be repaired. Try the following:

1) If you see the display/screen is showing behind the message box, this is almost definitely a setting issue. You need to press the menu button on your monitor and look for an option that says something like "display resolution message" or "ideal resolution message", or something else like that. Then you need to change the setting for that option, for example if "Yes" is selected, then you need to change it to "No" or if "Enable" is selected you need to change it to "Disable".

If you have the manual for the monitor, it should make it easier to know what setting to change. If not then go here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=05020100&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=710N&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

and download the Manual that you need.

2) If nothing is being displayed behind the message, try to change the display settings of your computer. While using a different monitor, try the following: If in XP, right-click on the desktop and go to Properties, and select the tab for display settings and adjust the resolution to something compatible with your monitor (like the one it suggests you to change it to). If in Vista/7, right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution/Display Settings and adjust it there.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I have samsung syncmaster 740nw how can i increase screen resolution to 1024x768?

you cannot set the resolution to 1024x768 but instead try 1280x720 or if you have graphics card try to set the resolution using its custom resolution by setting 1280x768.
It will surely solve your problem.

Well if anyone is interested and for general knowledge these are the 3entries that were killing the Desktop and Screen Saver tabs in XP. Hupigon13 seems to be at the root of it all.

Samsung SyncMaster 915N monitor

Go into advanced settings from the settings tab of "display properties" and select the "monitor" tab, from there, try changing the refresh rate. Toggle "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" if you do not see any other settings in the drop down other than the one that is already selected.
